CELEBRATIONS

Festival to feature mix of cultures

The third annual Las Vegas International Folk Festival is set for Wednesday through Sunday.

The event will feature performers from more than 27 countries, including Africa, the Caribbean Islands, Canada, Asia, Mexico, Latin America and Europe.

The festival, sponsored by the Mexico Vivo Dance Company, Fitzgeralds, the Plaza and the Fremont Street Experience, will feature dance, music, theatre, workshops and food and more than 1,000 performers.

The festival is set to take place on Fremont Street, as well as at the Winchester Theater, 3130 S. McLeod, and the Reed Whipple Theater, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Fourth of July bash planned at park

The seventh annual Independence Day Jubilee is set for 6 to 9:30 p.m. on July 3 at Seastrand Park, 6330 Camino Eldorado.

The free event will feature music, food from a variety of vendors, children's activities and more.

CHARITY

Safe Nest in need of items for children

Safe Nest, Clark County's largest agency devoted solely to domestic violence issues, is in need of donations this summer for children staying in the organization's shelter.

Items needed are baby wipes and diapers, pull-up diapers, summer clothing, sandals and flip-flops, sunscreen, hats, socks and underwear.

Donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the agency's counseling office, 2915 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 12. Call 860-8092 or visit www.safenest.org for more information.

Starbucks to offer free samples to customers

Starbucks coffee houses around the valley will be decked out in tropical colors on June 27 as the neighborhood locations will celebrate Summer Social, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Customers can drop in for complimentary samples of the company's latest summer beverages -- tangerine-lime and pomegranate-mango frappaccino juice blends.

SCREEN

'Madagascar' next up in Movie Madness

A showing of "Madagascar" is set for Saturday at Nature Discovery Park, 2627 Nature Park Drive, as part of the North Las Vegas Parks & Recreation Department's fifth annual Movie Madness Series.

Community members are welcome to bring a picnic dinner to the outdoor event. Saturday's movie showing will begin at dusk, and is free and open to the public.
