Boulder City's 75th Anniversary celebration has wound up after 11 days of events that marked the creation of the town built by and for the workers at Hoover Dam.
It all started March 10 with three showings of film clips from the era by the Dam Short Film Society, followed by a day full of events.
March 11 started off with American Legion Post 31 holding an open house where mementos, photos and other military paraphernalia were on display as part of the legion's Share the History through Photos and Clippings event.
Then in the afternoon and evening, more than 75 local artists including quilters, sculptors, photographers, potters and painters such as Lynne Jordan, Ihla Crowley, Darryl Martin, Steve Ligouri, Sue Burger, Cindy Bandy, Connie Ferraro, Steve Burke and Robin Kariam participated in the Boulder City Arts Council's Celebration of the Arts at the city's CCSN campus.
The highlight of the evening came when four school-age artists were named as grand prize winners in the Parks and Recreation Department's poster contest. Kindergarten student Raegan Crabtree, first-grader Kristin Stanton, third-grader Charlotte Wall and seventh-grader Caite Donnelly each received an award and $25 in cash from the council.
The following day brought a special free showing of art for senior citizens and Beta Sigma Phi sorority's Style Show, where period clothing from the 1930s through the 1980s were modeled through the lobby of the Boulder Dam Hotel.
On March 16, the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association threw a community-wide special exhibit reception in the lobby of the Boulder Dam Hotel after VIPs returned from Hoover Dam, where a special laser show projected the city's new marketing logo on the downstream face of the massive concrete structure.
Two days later, a special Chautauqua performance of Frank Crowe and the singing of the Sweet Adelines reverberated through the Arnazes' Boulder Theatre.
Last weekend also saw pole and barrel races at the horse corrals with a community concert held Sunday afternoon at Grace Community Church that wrapped up the city's celebration of its beginning back on March 16, 1931.
The weather cooperated, for the most part, except for March 11 when a cold front swept through Boulder City dumping snow in the early morning hours followed by hail, sleet and rain that didn't let up until mid-afternoon.
It was a weekend to remember, especially when Brad Appleby of Appleby Arts said, "We went up to Bootleg Canyon a little after six (in the morning) and took pictures of the snow that had completely covered the 'BC' letters on the hill."
