BASKETBALL

Bishop Gorman girls coach holding camp

Bishop Gorman High School girls basketball coach Sheryl Krmpotich will be holding a basketball camp for boys and girls ages 4-18 at Christ the King Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive. The camp is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on June 8-9 and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 10.

Annual Blazer event to tip off in June

The 14th annual Blazer Basketball Camp, run by Durango High School boys varsity coach Al La Rocque, will hold two sessions this summer at Durango's gym, 7100 W. Dewey Drive.

The first session runs from June 12-15, with the second session held from June 19-22. Both sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The cost of the camp, open for boys and girls ages 8-16, is $125. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt, photo package, a personal evaluation and their own Nike basketball, as well as expertise from the entire Durango basketball staff, camp counselors and players. Players who sign up for both sessions can do so for $225.

Church to offer summer camp

Christ the King Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, is offering a summer basketball camp June 26-28 for grades 4-9. Durango High School girls varsity coach John Bartleson will run the camp.

Academy to offer recreational league

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is offering a recreational league. Interested parties should register between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the school.

The cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners and all referee/scorekeeper fees. Games will be played at the Stations Sports Complex on Friday and Saturday evenings until June 17.

Academics and sports academy under way

Boys and girls ages 7-15 of all skill levels can participate in the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA's Academy of Academics and Sports.

The new session is now under way. Headed by former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players, the academy focuses on basketball fundamentals, advanced game execution and academic success.

Players can access a computer-learning center. Homework assistance will be provided.

The program is offered from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $79 per month, per player. Participants receive $25 off the first month when they donate a new basketball to the academy. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

YMCA holds Itty Bitty Basketball sign-ups

The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, invites pee wee players, ages 3-5, to learn basketball basics through a fundamental skill-building program. Parent participation is required.

The program runs from 5 to 5:45 p.m. until June 9. The cost is $60.

Broadus receives Congress tribute

Longtime Las Vegas boxing trainer and the original trainer of George Foreman, Charles "Doc" Broadus received a tribute on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on March 29.

"Congressman Jon Porter introduced the tribute and spoke of Doc's many accomplishments throughout his life," said Johnny "Bang-Bang" Jackson, director of Doc Broadus Sports & Entertainment.

An evening to honor the longtime boxing coach, who is now 87 years old, was held Sept. 17 in Las Vegas.

CAMPS

YMCA offers 70 summer camps

The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, and the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, will offer 70 specialty camps from June 12 to Aug. 25 for youth ages 5-17.

Registration can be conducted at both branches. Prices vary based on camp. Choices include sports, travel, theater, cooking, crafts and teen camps.

CYCLING

Tour de Cure set to pedal

The Tour de Cure, an annual national event held to raise money for the American Diabetes Association, will be held Saturday at Henderson's Discovery Park, 2011 Paseo Verde Parkway.

Three routes have been established for riders: the 100K (check-in 6:30 a.m., start 7 a.m.), the 50K (check-in 7:30 a.m., start 8 a.m.) and the 25K (check-in 8 a.m., start 8:30 a.m.) The 100K route will be near Hoover Dam, while the 50K and 25K rides will go through mostly residential areas.

Classes offered for youthful exercise

Steiner's tourney set for Paiute resort

Steiner's is hosting its 14th annual golf tournament on Friday at the Paiute Golf Resort, 10325 Nu Wav Kaiv Blvd.

The $135 admission cost includes unlimited beverages on the course and all-you-can-eat-and-drink at the awards ceremony following the tourney at Steiner's, 1750 N. Buffalo Drive. There also will be a $10,000 hole-in-one contest.

Mountain Falls to host 3A championship

The 2006 NIAA Class 3A Nevada State High School Boys Golf championship tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday at Mountain Falls Golf Club, 5001 Fox Ave. in Pahrump. The first tee time is slated for 11 a.m. Monday and Tuesday play begins at 9 a.m.

The 18-hole, 7,082-yard parkland course, is the centerpiece of Mountain Falls, a master-planned community by William Lyon Homes located 45 miles west of Interstate 15.

Spectators are invited to follow the players. A spectator waiver and guidelines will be provided on the first tee.

Police-firefighters tournament on tap

The fourth annual Police vs. Firefighters Charity Golf Tournament will be held May 25 at the Highland Falls Golf Club, 10201 Sun City Blvd.

Check-in is at 7 a.m., with tee-off at 8 a.m. The cost is $120 per player or $480 per foursome. There will be hole-in-one prizes, a longest drive and closest to the pin contest, a raffle and other awards. The entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a tournament hat.

Registration will be held the day of the event if openings are available. All proceeds will benefit the Southern Nevada Police Athletic League and the UMC Burn Center.

Alzheimer's tourney to tee off on June 3

The second annual Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 3 at the Aliante Golf Club, 3100 W. Elkhorn Drive in North Las Vegas.

The sign-up deadline is May 20. The cost is $75 per person and includes greens fees, cart, range balls and lunch. There also will be raffle prizes, a putting contest, a closest-to-the-pin contest, a longest drive contest and a giant team skins game.

The tourney begins at 7 a.m., with check-in beginning at 5:30 a.m. The tournament will have a shotgun start and will be played in the four-person scramble format.

LACROSSE

League to sponsor free clinic in June

The Las Vegas Lacrosse League is sponsoring a free lacrosse clinic for boys and girls in grades 3-8. The two-day clinic, scheduled for June 2 and 3 at Oxford Park in Summerlin, is intended for children that have never played the sport.

The clinic begins at 4 p.m. June 2, with the first-day skills session running from 5 to 7 p.m. The clinic concludes June 3, with the second skills session running from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a watermelon break and an exhibition game.

No pads are required or will be allowed and there will be no contact in the camp. Participants should bring their own stick, be prepared to borrow one or purchase an entry-level stick and ball at the clinic for $30.

Aleman headed to Arizona State

Cimarron-Memorial High School's Randel Aleman, a four-time state champion who became the 22nd prep grappler in Nevada to accomplish that feat, has signed a letter of intent to attend Arizona State University.

The senior helped lead the Spartans team to its fourth straight title last winter.
