ARTS

Singers needed for SNMAS concert

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society invites singers in the area to perform in its annual Pops Concert, set for June 10 and 11 at Horn Theatre on the CCSN Cheyenne campus.

The Musical Arts Chorus will prepare music by Broadway composers George Gershwin and Jerome Kern. Rehearsals are held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sundays in room 222 of UNLV's Alta Ham Fine Arts Building.

Bloomingdale's event to benefit NBT

Nevada Ballet Theatre will benefit from all sales made May 17 at the Bloomingdale's Home Store at Fashion Show Mall, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

That day, beginning at noon, Bloomingdale's will donate 10 percent of net purchases to Nevada Ballet Theatre. Guests can "shop for a cause" until 9 p.m. that night. Receipts must be presented to the Nevada Ballet Theatre table inside the store.

Nevada Arts Council supports art education

Applications for three grant programs from the Nevada Arts Council aimed at supporting arts in education projects for 2007 are now available.

The postmark application deadline for the Better Learning through the Arts grant is May 16, and for the Artist in Residence grants and the Arts Learning for All grants, the deadline is May 19.

Vision Source to award student scholarships

Vision Source, a network of local optometrists, is awarding 10 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to seniors graduating this spring from a high school in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas or Henderson.

Students must plan on attending a university, college, community college or trade school in the fall. Entry forms are available through May 26 at locations listed at www.visionsource.com.

Families welcome to barbecue and a movie

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites everyone to enjoy a family celebration, barbecue dinner, games for youth, a special gift for mothers, and a movie in the park beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Brinley Middle School soccer field, 2480 Maverick St.

Families will enjoy field games, entertainment and an all-you-can-eat barbecue. "Nanny McPhee" will be shown on a big screen outdoors beginning at sunset. Admission is free. The barbecue dinner is priced at $10 per person or $25 for a family of up to five.

The event is sponsored by Brinley Community School and Gibson Community School, which provide supervised sports, recreation and leisure activities for youth and adults.

Evening of Excellence planned at Red Rock

The board of directors of The Children's Forum announces its 10th anniversary of The Evening of Excellence. It is slated for Saturday at the Red Resort. Cocktails and a silent auction begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Cocktail attire is requested. The master of ceremonies will be TV news personality Nate Tannenbaum.

MOTHER'S DAY

It's showtime for moms with 'Le R?ve'

The cast and crew of "Le R?ve," and the staff at Wynn Las Vegas plan to honor mothers by offering 2-for-1 show tickets for both performances on Sunday, Mother's Day. Showtimes are 7:30 and 10:30 p.m.

Patrons may purchase tickets at the Wynn Las Vegas ticket office or by calling 770-9966. The Mother's Day rate must be requested and is subject to availability. Minimum is two tickets per person; maximum is four. Tickets start at $90.

Canyon hike, talk on archeology set

The Nevada State Museum and Historical Society will offer a Wednesday hiking tour of Sloan Canyon, south of the city, and a Thursday lecture on recent archeological findings at Valley of Fire State Park and the Clark County Wetlands.

The moderately strenuous hike is set for 7 to 11 a.m. Reservations must be made by calling 485-5205, ext. 227. The canyon area encompasses 48,000 acres and a major petroglyph site.

The lecture will convene at 7 p.m. at the museum and historical society home, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, inside Lorenzi Park. Call 486-5205 for more information. Archeo-Nevada is co-sponsoring the event, which will feature remarks by archeologist Rick Ahlstrom and anthropologist Kevin Rafferty.
