Silverado High School's baseball team was ranked No. 16 in the nation by the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in its May 8 top 25 poll.
The Skyhawks, ranked No. 1 in Southern Nevada by the Las Vegas Review-Journal in every one of its weekly polls this spring, fell from the No. 9 spot. Silverado, coached by Brian Whitaker, was 27-3-1 as of press time.

Palo Verde to hold annual hoops camp
Palo Verde High School, 333 Pavilion Center Drive, will be conducting its annual basketball camps this summer. The camps will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 12-15 and will be held in the Palo Verde gym.
The cost of the camp is $125 and each camper will receive a camp jersey and awards for competition. Individual skills such as shooting, passing, dribbling and defense will be emphasized. The camp is open for boys and girls entering grades 2-9. Team discounts will be given for five or more teammates.

Bishop Gorman girls coach to instruct

Annual Durango event to tip off in June
The 14th annual Blazer Basketball Camp, run by Durango High School boys varsity coach Al La Rocque, will hold two sessions this summer at Durango's gym, 7100 W. Dewey Drive. The first session runs June 12-15, with the second session to be held June 19-22. Both will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The cost of the camp, open for boys and girls ages 8-16, is $125. Participants who sign up for both sessions can do so for $225. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt, a photo package, a personal evaluation and a Nike basketball, as well as training from the entire Durango basketball staff, camp counselors and players.

Church to offer summer camp

The first annual Las Vegas Venom All-Star game will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Palo Verde High School gym, 333 S. Pavilion Center Drive. Former UNLV and NBA star Tyrone Nesby will lead the Venom All-Stars, an American Basketball Association team, against the Court Jesters, a team from Massachusetts.

Doc Broadus plans local amateur bouts
Doc Broadus Sports and Entertainment and L.A. Boxing, in association with Executive Mortgage Group, Maui Sports and Entertainment and Bang-Bang Boxing Hawaii, will present Rampage in Vegas, a series of amateur bouts to be held on Saturday at L.A. Boxing Facility, 6315 S. Rainbow Blvd.
The event will feature 15 bouts from amateur boxers from Las Vegas and Hawaii and also will include entertainment by Tamae Vaarii Tahitian Dance Group and a special guest appearance by former IBF flyweight champion Rolando Bohol.

NYFL opens sign-ups for fall season
Nevada Youth Football League announces registration is open for the fall 2006 full contact, tackle football season. NYFL is the largest football league in Nevada and has teams in all areas.
Registration for all players takes place at league office at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. To register, players must have either a player ID card from NYFL or an original birth certificate and utility bill.
For the Youth Division, ages 6-14, registration is $160. Payment is cash or money order only. Players must be present for a weigh-in and accompanied by a parent. Practice starts the first week in August with games starting in September. The season will conclude in mid-November.

Baby Carriage Open to aid young moms
The Courtney Children's Foundation is holding its second annual Baby Carriage Open on June 3 at Painted Desert Golf Club, 5555 Painted Mirage Road. The event is a fundraiser to benefit young mothers and their infants with needs in care, nutrition and parenting skills in underserved areas of west and north Las Vegas.

League to sponsor free clinic in June
The Las Vegas Lacrosse League is sponsoring a free lacrosse clinic for boys and girls in grades 3-8 set for June 2-3 at Oxford Park in Summerlin. The clinic is intended for children who have never played the sport.
The clinic begins at 4 p.m. June 2, with the first-day skills session running from 5 to 7 p.m. The second skills session runs from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. the following day, followed by a watermelon break and an exhibition game.
No pads are required or will be allowed and there will be no contact in the camp. Participants should bring their own stick, be prepared to borrow one or purchase an entry-level stick and ball at the clinic for $30. Instruction will be given on the basics -- throwing, catching, scooping, dodging and the rules. A parental consent form will be required before participation.
