Lone Mountain Children's Discovery Park, 4445 N. Jensen St., opened to the public with a dedication celebration in September.
"Lone Mountain Regional Park is a great resource for the rapidly growing northwest area," said Clark County Commissioner Chip Maxfield, who represents the area. "With the opening of the latest phase, the beautiful new Lone Mountain Children's Discovery Park, we're creating a wonderful opportunity for children in the northwest to learn together while they have fun outdoors."
The newest phase of Lone Mountain Park is a 5-acre learning and play area where children, parents, grandparents and friends can interact. The park contains elements related to history, math, reading, geography, earth science and plant and animal life.
The history area takes participants on a chronological journey through Clark County's past, starting with the early explorers up to modern times. The math area includes a giant abacus, a section on metrics, one on Roman numerals, and large math cubes with simple calculations on all sides. A giant clock teaches time and acts as a sundial.
Additionally, there is a maze, a large climbing wall, walking paths, a demonstration garden, traditional playgrounds, open turf areas, a large, shaded picnic area and a small outdoor amphitheater.
J.W. Zunino Landscape Architects designed the latest park addition. The company also is designing the next three phases of Lone Mountain Regional Park, which will expand the developed area by 100 acres. The next phases will add basketball and tennis courts, bocce ball, walking trails, horseshoe courts, more turf areas, picnic areas, sand volleyball, a desert demonstration garden, an equestrian trailhead, restrooms, parking and more.
The park has been planned with input from the surrounding community through a series of public meetings over the past several years. The goal of the master plan was to design a regional park with state-of-the-art amenities, while preserving the rural integrity of the area.
When fully developed, the park will be 371 acres surrounding and including Lone Mountain.
