Centennial Hills resident Jeffrey Hennessy said he was tired of big fitness clubs, so he partnered up with his personal trainer Kurt Krohm to open their own center, Snap Fitness.

"This concept is providing a neighborhood club," Hennessy said. "This is not a big-box club with swimming pools. We said here's what people need to work out, let's give it to them."

The club, located at 3350 Novat St., Suite 160, is the first Snap Fitness to open in Las Vegas.

Although Snap is just a fraction of the size of a large health club, Hennessy said, "You can find anything here as you would in any other gym." The club has treadmills, stair climbers, exercise bikes, elliptical machines, arc trainers, a cardio theater that lets members watch TV while they work out, free weights and strength equipment.

Krohm said there is enough equipment that members do not need to wait for machines.

Hennessy said Snap offers everything needed to get a complete workout at a lower rate than many clubs because it doesn't have areas such as shower facilities.

Memberships start at $34.95 a month and there are no contracts to sign.

Snap Fitness was founded in Minnesota in 2003, and Hennessy said the Las Vegas locations are adding personal trainers to the model.

Every member will receive a free session with a personal trainer. They will be given an orientation on all the equipment and can add a trainer for an extra fee.

"We have so many new machines and people don't always know how they work," Krohm said.

Krohm, who has been a personal trainer for 12 years, said members who see a trainer at least twice a week see the best results, although it depends on individual goals.

"When they see me, they're motivated," Krohm said. "If not, they know they are going to get a call from Kurt."

There are two more Snap Fitness clubs in the works in the northwest, and Hennessy said they could open more down the line. Once the others open, members will have access to all the clubs with their membership.

Snap Fitness is open 24 hours every day. Managers' hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. When managers are not there, the store operates on a 24-hour card-key locking system. There are surveillance cameras continuously monitoring facilities. Trainers can work with members at any time.

There are 550 clubs open nationwide, and Hennessy said there has never been a theft or security issue. The key card also tracks how many people walk in after it has been swiped.

"We welcome guests, but not in the middle of the night," Hennessy said.

Members at Snap also can use the club's tanning beds. There is an additional monthly fee for the service.
