StorageOne accepting Goodwill offerings

The Flamingo West location of StorageOne, 9960 W. Flamingo Road, is joining forces with Goodwill by accepting on-site donations.

An attended donation center will be available 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week to accept donations of clothing, entertainment items, equipment, furniture, housewares and small appliances in good working condition.

"Goodwill truly appreciates this new partnership with StorageOne which showcases their commitment to our community," said Goodwill president Steve Chartrand. "The donations of gently used goods will enable more citizens to find gainful employment, thus increasing their quality of life."

Clark County seeks firefighters

Clark County is encouraging local residents to apply to become firefighters. Although the county will not begin accepting applications until Dec. 1, the upcoming informational seminars will address important dates for this year's firefighter recruitment, the application process, employment requirements, the testing process, test-taking tips and available positions. A question-and-answer session will be featured as well.

Seminars are set for 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Whitney Community Center, 5712 Missouri Ave.; and from 8 to 10 a.m. Nov. 18 at CCSN's West Charleston Campus, 6375 West Charleston Blvd.

Applications will be accepted Dec. 1 through Dec. 15 at the Clark County Government Center's Human Resources Department, or online through the county Web site, www.co.clark.nv.us. For more information, call 455-2233.

Viewing set for Mercury's transit

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society invites the public to view a rare celestial event, a transit of Mercury, Wednesday at the CCSN college observatory, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.

The planet Mercury will begin to cross the face of the sun at 11:12 a.m. and will complete the transit at 4:08 p.m. The next transit will not occur until 2016. Sunspots and solar prominences also may be seen.

Attempting to observe the sun without specialized viewing aids may result in serious eye damage. Telescopes with special solar filters will be set up at the observatory. The event is free and open to the public. Call 651-4759 for more information.

Author to speak in Sun City Summerlin

Author Len Kreisler plans to talk to the Science Club of Sun City Summerlin at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at Desert Vista Community Center, 10360 Sun City Blvd., room five. Kreisler was medical director for the Nevada Test Site for 18 years.

Fleming's plans wine dinner

Make Strides event raises $300,000

More than 5,000 children and adults from across the valley raised $300,000 at the American Cancer Society's seventh annual Make Strides Against Breast Cancer walk held Oct. 7 at JW Marriott.

Several hundred participants were cancer survivors and wore pink T-shirts or sashes and signed the American Cancer Society's Journal of Hope. The journal contains encouraging messages to help the newly diagnosed.

The American Cancer Society is the nation's largest non-governmental funder of cancer research, spending more than $22 million in 2005. For more information, visit >www.cancer.org

Free eye screenings start on Monday

Vision Source, a network of optometrists in Las Vegas, plans free diabetic eye screenings Monday through Nov. 18 as part of Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness and American Diabetes Month. The screenings are available to diabetic patients who have not had an eye exam in the past year.

Vision Source has 11 locations in Las Vegas and Henderson. Appointments are limited and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Library to host free health fair

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District plans Just For the Health of It, a free health fair open to the public, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Summerlin Library, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.

UMC makes organ donor honor roll

University Medical Center (UMC) recently achieved "honor roll" status for its organ donor program assigned by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Of the roughly 6,000 hospitals in the United States, only about 318 have received this award.

UMC partnered with the Nevada Donor Network, the procurement agency for organ donation in Southern Nevada, increasing the hospital's organ conversion rate. UMC achieved a 76 percent conversion rate, or 32 out of a potential 42 donors. The comparable national rate is 58 percent. The overall average for southern Nevada hospitals was 50 percent.

Stage Door presents rock musical

Stage Door will present "tick, tick... BOOM!" opening at 8 p.m. Friday at the LVLT Black Box Theatre, 3920 Schiff Drive. The limited engagement runs through Nov. 26 with performances at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

The production is Jonathan Larson's autobiographical pop rock musical. Larson wrote the Broadway blockbuster "Rent," for which he was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award.

Guest conductor to lead Philharmonic

The Las Vegas Philharmonic's eighth season continues on Nov. 18 with guest conductor David Itkin leading the orchestra at 8 p.m. in UNLV's Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall. Itkin will give a Concert Preview Talk at 7:15 p.m.

Itkin, the music director/conductor for both the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the Abilene (Texas) Philharmonic Orchestra, is one of three guest conductors who hopes to fill the shoes of retiring Philharmonic music director Harold Weller. Each will take a turn on the podium during the first half of the Philharmonic's Classical Season, which is themed "Passing the Baton."

"This program will be a great showcase for the Las Vegas Philharmonic's abilities," Itkin said. "In my experience, every piece on the program has been a favorite with audiences."

Computer classes continue at Derfelt

Seniors 50 and above are invited to participate in ongoing computer classes from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Derfelt Senior Center, 3343 West Washington Ave., in Lorenzi Park.

Individual instruction is available as well as Introduction to Computers/Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word/Office and typing/keyboarding. The cost is $5 per session.
