AUCTION

Annual event will benefit the homeless

The annual auction benefiting the Las Vegas branch of Family Promise, a nonprofit organization that provides temporary housing to homeless families and aids them in getting permanent dwellings and employment, is planned for 7 p.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4601 W. Lake Mead Blvd., one block east of Decatur Boulevard.

Bidders can vie for furniture, live plants, catered gourmet dinners, private concerts by gospel ensembles and many other goods and services.

A supper featuring chili varieties ranging from vegetarian and mild to five-alarm, augmented by homemade cornbread, will begin at 6 p.m. Donations for the supper are voluntary; admission to the auction is free.

Proceeds are divided between Family Promise and the host church.

Shoes for charity giveaway needed

The Goodie Two Shoes Giveaway is seeking donations to provide more than 1,200 disadvantaged children, pre-selected from 16 Southern Nevada Boys and Girls Clubs, with new shoes, socks, backpacks, school supplies and more during its one-day event.

Solar Home Tour will be held Oct. 7

The Southern Nevada Solar Home Tour will educate valley residents on how to trim energy bills by harnessing the sun. Energy-efficient buildings across the valley will open their doors to interested parties Oct. 7 during the Southern Nevada Solar Home Tour.

Exhibitor booths will open at 9 a.m. at The Gardens at The Springs Preserve, 3701 Alta, just east of Valley View Boulevard. The home tours will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those attending will meet at The Gardens at The Springs Preserve.

Local homes, schools and businesses will preview the latest energy-saving appliances.

Light the Night registration begins

Teams are forming for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's second annual Light the Night 5K Walk, planned for Saturday on the campus of UNLV. The walk, which commemorates lives touched by blood cancers, is a community celebration with music, refreshments and family activities. Proceeds support blood cancer research and patient services.

Mickey's Magic Show will begin Oct. 5

Disney Live! will be presenting Mickey's Magic Show Oct. 5 8 at The Orleans Arena.

Show times are: 6 p.m. Oct. 5 and Oct. 6; 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Oct. 7; and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Oct. 8.

The show will include performances by Donald, Goofy, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and several of the Disney princesses, including Jasmine, Snow White and Belle.

Ticket prices range from $16 to $55. Tickets are available through the Orleans Arena box office at 284-7777.

Las Vegas Ride for Kids scheduled for Sunday

The second annual Las Vegas Ride for Kids, a motorcycle ride benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, is scheduled for Sunday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the ride starts 10 a.m. The riders will work their way down to the scenic loop at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to the end point at Blue Diamond Park.

Registration is $35 per bike.
