View welcomes announcements of recent achievements of Favorite Sons & Daughters who have graduated from local high schools. Achievements may run the gamut from earning a college degree to successfully climbing Mount Everest. The Mean Machine Team won first place in the City of Las Vegas Youth Basketball League 2007.
Although this was the first time many of the players had played basketball, coach Kevin Hawkins was able to guide them to a first-place win.
Ty Sivertsen, 18, a senior at Cimarron-Memorial High School, was named student of the month by the Summerlin Lions Club Honors and Award Program.
Sivertsen, son of Sheri and Darren Sivertsen of Las Vegas, is student body president, participated in student council, Varsity Quiz, JV soccer, varsity tennis and volleyball, and achieved a 4.5 GPA.
He attained Eagle Scout status in the Boy Scouts of America, plays basketball with the NJB Basketball League, and has participated in community service with the Boy Scouts and also with his church youth group.
Sivertsen has been accepted to Brigham Young University and plans to serve a mission through his church.
Xan Vital, 10, has been named the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge's top -scoring fourth-grade student.
The National Word Power Challenge is a vocabulary contest designed for schools nationwide for grades 4 through 8.
Xan, a student at Richard H. Bryan Elementary School, is a dancer and will perform this summer at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Xan is an avid reader of game manuals, comic books and novels. His favorite books are Brian Jacques' "Red Wall Adventures," Rick Riordan's "The Lightning Thief," "Harry Potter," and the "Star Wars Jedi" series.
Xan's future plans are to be a film director, a game designer and a dancer. He writes reviews of kids' books and films in his spare time.
Xan is the son of Erica Vital and Yves Vital, both of Las Vegas; grandson of Bill and Jean Hector of Las Vegas, and Fritz and Roselle Vital of New York.
