Somber salute
Families, friends remember local soldiers killed overseas

There were 48 American flags on display at Lorenzi Park and everyone in attendance wished there were none.

Each flag signified a Nevada soldier who lost his or her life overseas. There was one for Richard Perez Jr., a United States Marine who died in February 2005. There was another for John Lukac, a private first class with the Marines who died in October 2004. The list went on.

Las Vegas went basketball crazy last month when the UNLV Runnin' Rebels made a dramatic run to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. Even though the Rebels didn't go all the way to the Final Four, their return to Las Vegas found them greeted by throngs of supportive fans at the Thomas & Mack Center.

But as it turns out, Las Vegas -- Summerlin, to be specific -- has its very own national basketball champions after all. They're just a little younger.
