Art workshop to be offered at Winchester

Seattle artist Buster Simpson will offer a public art workshop from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. The workshop is free, but preregistration is required and enrollment is limited.

Simpson holds degrees from the University of Michigan and has worked on major infrastructure projects, site master planning, signature sculptures, museum installations and community projects, including a $14 million light rail bridge collaboration over the Salt River in Phoenix, now under construction, and art master plans for urban centers and watersheds that integrate community and ecology with art.

He uses media ranging from rotting wood to the highly technical Brush with Illumination, and he has emphasized a devotion to the earth and its ecology in everything he has made.

Simpson will be a featured speaker in a discussion of green public art projects at the Americans For The Arts convention on June 1-3 at the Flamingo. He also is one of three artists currently helping to design Clark County's 12-mile Flamingo Arroyo Trail.

ENVIRONMENT

Solar-powered refueling station opens

The Las Vegas Valley Water District marked the opening of a solar-powered hydrogen refueling station on April 12.

The effort included the Water District, UNLV and the UNLV Research Foundation.

Culminating a four-year effort spearheaded by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., (who helped obtain crucial grant funding) and through a partnership with UNLV, the Water District's pilot hydrogen refueling station project provides an additional alternative fuel for Water District vehicles. Alternative-fuel vehicles, including gas/electric hybrids and those utilizing compressed natural gas and biodiesel, make up 77 percent of the district's fleet.

The station uses power collected by solar panels that follow the sun's path across the sky. The facility's generators use electrolysis to separate oxygen from water to extract hydrogen which is stored and used as fuel. Hydrogen is colorless, odorless and releases no damaging by-products. It has no carbons, unlike other fuels that produce harmful emissions.
