Entertainer Wes Winters, 42, was only 5 years old when he first heard Liberace play the piano on television. Smitten with his playing and exuberance, Winters spent the next seven years tickling the ivories in the style of his newfound mentor.
"There was an incredible amount of joy in everything he did on stage," Winters said. "Pure happiness and joy oozing out of every cell."
A self-taught pianist, Winters, as a child, did not read music and to this day plays by ear. He honed his art to the accompaniment of Liberace records. After years as a nightclub singer in Kansas City, Mo., by 2003 Winters moved to Las Vegas and worked his way into his dream job -- Liberace tribute artist at The Liberace Museum.
"It's fun music," Winters said. "If it touches you, it's a good thing. It brings back lovely memories."
A Winters performance is a mix of accomplished piano playing, vocal impersonation and comedy that is delivered with an effervescent pop. Winters' new one-hour show opens Thursday and will include the upbeat Liberace standards "Beer Barrel Polka," "Bumble Boogie" and his closer, "I'll Be Seeing You." Audience participation is strongly encouraged.
To Winters' delight, his repeat customers include children. He declared, "Children have no concept of Liberace. You educate them a little bit. Then, later, at the museum this stuff clicks."
