BACK IN TIME

Step back into the past with the Goodfellas band -- a time when the Copacabana was the talk of the town, and supper clubs were the Saturday night hotspot. Rock bands and R&B singers dressed to the nines performed, and musical acts catered to the crowd.
The Goodfellas band of Las Vegas is on a mission to bring the music of the '50s, '60s and '70s to the masses. At a recent gig at Bugsy's Bar and Grill, 6145 W. Sahara Ave., the Goodfellas played to a packed banquet room crowd, mixed with both young and old. Staring up at the eight men in their pin-striped suits and fedoras, the audience was transported back in time.

Eddie and Connie McGath's two sons attend different schools in Henderson. Christian, 9, spends his days with the Clark County School District, and 7-year-old Preston's education comes from the Lake Mead Christian Academy.
The McGaths want both their children to study the Bible, along with reading, writing and math, but Christian is deaf and requires a more specialized education.

When Clark County School District officials came to Vegas PBS general manager Tom Axtell in 1996 with a cooperative proposal to institute a television-based program that would aid in the decrease of high school drop-out rates in Las Vegas, the Henderson executive immediately was on board. Now, that same principle has been brought into the 21st century with the birth of the Virtual High School Educational Technology Campus.
The program's building, which is slated to open in 2009, will be located at 3000 E. Flamingo Road and was officially dedicated on July 16. The site will serve as a base of operations for the distance-learning program.
