The Clark County School District is forming a study group to evaluate the worthiness of year-round schools, before formulating parameters for a ballot question asking for support for school construction funding, to possibly be voted on in the next election.

Issues to be discussed include academic achievement, family-specific considerations and expenses connected to year-round institutions. The district is looking for a mix of parents, non-parents, those who support year-round schools and those who are against them to participate in the volunteer group, which is accepting applications until Thursday.

"Some will contend that year-round schools save money, and others will contend it costs more money," said Joyce Haldeman, director of community and public relations for CCSD. "There is no pre-conceived outcome for the group."

The district is hiring an outside consultant to look over the applications and select group members. After the group concludes, a recommendation will be made to Superintendent Walt Rulffes based on the findings.

CCSD hopes to have a broad spectrum of participants in the group, from parents to people who don't have children, but who still pay taxes.

Two trustees and two people from schools will be appointed by the superintendent, and the group will total 15 people debating the pros and cons of having year-round schools.

"Having a wide diversity of people is important to the superintendent," Haldeman said.

Potential study group members must commit to meeting five times, each of which will take a minimum of four hours.

For more information about the study group or to request an application, visit www.CCSD.net or call 799-5301.

Applications are due on Thursday in the superintendent's office at 5100 W. Sahara Ave.
