TIME TO GET SOME OF THE GREEN OUT OF GREEN VALLEY

Geoff Schumacher's article on grass was excellent ("It's Past Time to Dig Up Every Lawn," R-J Rewind, Nov. 20). It also is a chance for me to get some things off my chest.

I live in Sun City MacDonald Ranch in Henderson. Del Webb has always made the new home buyers plant their own front yards. As a result, the Sun Cities in Henderson (there are three) have the most homes with desert landscaping. The few with grass are duplexes or "managed houses" where Del Webb did plant grass and the lawns are cared for by a service. This same thing happened in Sun City Summerlin. All of the duplexes had grass front yards, but a couple of years ago, they were dug up and replaced with desert.

So I would infer that the Sun Cities have the best record for keeping out grass lawns. Check it out for yourself sometime.

For a couple of years in the '90s and early 2000s, I sold new homes.

The other builders did not do what Del Webb did. Each new homeowner was offered a choice of grass or desert included in the price of the home. Most chose grass. DR Horton and many of the other major builders had this policy. Just look around.

The worst offenders of all are not only your rich homeowners, but Green Valley and Green Valley Ranch. One gated community in Green Valley Ranch has grass at every homestead. I wouldn't be surprised if it is part of their CC&Rs.

The day I was there, lawn services were up and down the street, mowing, edging, blowing, wasting energy and making a racket. The grass on Paseo Verde and Valle Verde is totally unnecessary in this day and age.

They need to be told to replace the green in Green Valley with desert. How can we convince them?

It would be interesting to read the CC&Rs for these "green" communities to see if grass is required.

If not, they need to get rid of the grass and change the rules.

THE VIEW IS JUST THE RIGHT SIZE TO GET THE JOB DONE

Thank you for mailing me the View. It is just right for me, not too stressfully long for reading with cataracts, not too short to leave out important news.

I enjoyed last week's Restaurant Guides in your issues especially.

Your newspaper is much appreciated.
