Amy Dixon believes five of the learning-disabled students in her third grade class were able to meet standards in reading and language arts on standardized tests because of the inclusive education practices she implemented.
In addition to co-teaching with the special education teacher at Morrow Elementary School, Dixon implemented peer support and differentiated instruction strategies and feels the students' success is directly related to the practices.
"The regular education classroom is the best environment whenever possible," Dixon said.
Her school received a Silver 2006-07 Inspiration Award from the Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education (Nevada PIE).
The $10,000 award recognizes Morrow's commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its students.
Nevada PIE, a collaboration of the Clark County School District, the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Public Education Foundation and the community, named Dixon its Teacher of the Month for September in honor of her commitment to addressing the instructional needs of all students through inclusive practices.
