What's Christmas without a tree-lighting ceremony, a winter film festival, the obligatory ice skating extravaganza and a Christmas hoedown?

Don't wait around to find out. Look no further than Downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience for a slew of holiday events.

The festivities will begin Wednesday with the 21st annual Downtown Hoedown at the Fremont Street Experience, 425 Fremont St. Turn out for a boot scootin' good time as country stars Hal Ketchum, Sawyer Brown and Ray Scott add some country seasoning to your holiday celebration.

The festivities will begin as Ray Scott takes the 1st Street stage at 6 p.m., followed by Hal Ketchum from 9 to 11 p.m. Sawyer Brown, best known for the hit, "Some Girls Do," will play the 3rd Street stage from 9 to 11 p.m.

"The hoedown is in honor of the National Finals Rodeo, which will be going on about the same time," spokeswoman Lisa Robinson said. "But we feel like it's a great and festive way to kick off the season. It's been a very popular event over the years."

Downtown's annual tree-lighting ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at the 3rd Street intersection with Mayor Oscar Goodman flipping the switch. A new entertainment addition to the Fremont Street Experience will be the Bright Lights on Ice ice-skating and acrobatic wonderment featuring holiday music and optical delights.

"The best thing about the new show is that you really get to see something you've never seen here at the Experience," Robinson said. "And it all takes place next to a 50-foot Christmas tree."

Shows will begin at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. daily from Dec. 11-22. There is no cost for admission at either event.

For a more laid back, family-friendly outing, visit the Lied Discovery Children's Museum, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North, for the December to Remember movie festival featuring short films on diversity, the holiday and classic movies.

"Our specific theme this year is one of diversity," marketing manager Lynn Osmera said. "We will show inclusive holiday films that touch on Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. And we also have films that will give families an opportunity to understand holiday traditions from around the world."

According to Osmera, the museum's goal is to both entertain and educate.

"We try to make it fun with bean bags and an exciting holiday atmosphere," Osmera said. "But it's a great learning experience for parents and kids."

The festival will run every weekend through Dec. 30. Admission is $3 each.
