Caucus countdown

Forty days remain before the Jan. 19 Nevada Democratic and Republican presidential caucuses. At each precinct-level caucus, voters can anticipate meeting with neighbors at schools, churches, community centers, libraries and homes to select delegates that will support their preferred presidential nominees. Caucus participants also may discuss issues they would like to see added to their party's platform at the county level.

Registered voters should receive a postcard notice of where to meet for their party's caucus. Caucus sites also will be listed on party Web sites: www.nvdemscaucus.com for Democrats and www.nvgopcaucus.com for Republicans.

Any registered voter may participate in his or her party's caucus. Republicans must register 30 days before the caucus date, but Democrats can register on site on the day of the caucus. Voters that are 17 years old but will be 18 on or before Nov. 4 also are welcome to register and participate.

CAUCUS FAQS

Question: What does it feel like to go to a caucus?

Answer: (From www.nvdemscaucus.com.) You should feel right at home. You will be meeting with your neighbors, so you'll know some of them. If you are new to Nevada, it is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and have a chance to have an impact on politics -- on what issues the party will stand for and what presidential candidates believe.

Many caucus participants leave feeling good about the fact they have participated in a democratic exercise that determines who the next President of the United States will be.

Question: Is this my only chance to vote for my favorite Republican presidential candidate or can I wait and vote in the primary?

Answer: (From www.nvgopcaucus.com.) The January Nevada caucuses will be the only chance you'll have for voting for your favorite Republican presidential candidate. Presidential candidates will not be on the ballot in Nevada's August primary.
