Mayor Jim Gibson and Ward 1 Councilwoman Gerri Schroder were in attendance at the Dec.4 Henderson City Council meeting. Ward 2 Councilman Andy Hafen and Ward 4 Councilman Steve Kirk were on a conference call, but due to a technical problem, only one person could stay on the line at a time. Hafen sat in on the meeting, and Ward 3 Councilman Jack Clark was absent.

CONSENT AGENDA APPROVED 3-0

The council unanimously approved the consent agenda consisting of items CA-004 through CA-029.

HENDERSON NAMED MOST SECURE CITY

The mayor and council were honored with the Farmers Insurance Most Secure Cities award. Stephen Brown, Farmers Insurance Nevada state executive director, and Jerry Davies, Farmers Insurance group director of media relations, presented the award.

Farmers Insurance looked at 379 cities and came up with the most secure based on crime, weather, terrorist threats, natural disasters, job growth and school systems.

Gibson thanked the city's staff of more than 1,800 people. "It is our privilege and honor to be recognized," he said.

SILVERMAN TRIATHLON RACE DIRECTOR RECOGNIZES CITY

Frank Lowery, race director for the Silverman Full Distance Triathlon Race, presented the mayor and council with an appreciation plaque for their continued support of the race.

Lowery said the race, which was held Nov. 11 and attracted Olympic gold medal winners, Tour Du France riders and other athletes from 14 countries and 48 states, wouldn't exist without the help of the city.

The next race will be held Nov. 9, 2008, in Henderson.

LAS VEGAS SPORTS COMPLEX PLANS APPROVED

The council unanimously approved plans for the six-building, 83,000-square-foot Vegas Sports Complex being built by Brealinn Development Co. on the northwest corner of Van Wagenen Street and Arthur Avenue.

Schroder asked a Brealinn representative if the company would be willing to build the back wall of its business to 8 feet instead of the required 6 feet for the residents' safety, if the neighbors approve the wall. The representative said he would pool the neighborhood and work with the residents to build a secure wall.
