LOCAL FENCERS QUALIFY FOR JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Several local athletes from the Red Rock Fencing Club recently qualified to participate in the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships to be held in Charlotte, N.C., in February. Thirteen-year-old Amanda Marks led the way in the qualifying competition held on Dec. 1 and 2 by taking four gold medals in the women's foil and saber events.

Other Red Rock athletes qualifying for Junior Olympics were: Everett Hilke, Austin Harper, Ja Manapon, Nick Stover, Leila Ricciardo, Nicco Marcus, Fatima Casden and Katherine Wright.

From the Battle Born club, Daniel and Aleczandrea Schmelzle qualified, as did Alyson Lefkowitz, representing the Salle du Mask Noir club. Fencing Academy of Nevada athletes Dylan Brown, Alec Brown and Dakota Root also made the cut for Junior Olympics.

CSN BASEBALL'S LEADER HONORED AS COACH OF THE YEAR

The American Baseball Coaches Association has named CSN head baseball coach Tim Chambers as the 2007 Diamond Sports ABCA Regional Coach of the Year. Chambers will be recognized at the annual ABCA Hall of Fame banquet on Jan. 4 in Philadelphia. Practice for the CSN baseball season starts on Jan. 10, with a new season beginning on Jan. 25.

HEINRICH YMCA OFFERS VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, offers a youth volleyball league from 5 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of the month. The league includes 3-on-3, 4-on-4 and 6-on-6 volleyball for girls, boys, coed, beginner and advanced divisions. The cost is $30 per player. For more information, call 877-9622.
