Winchester Cultural Center celebrates films of Sidney Poitier

Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, will salute the films of Sidney Poitier during African-American Movie Month in February.

All films begin at 7 p.m. in the Winchester Cultural Center Theater. Admission is free.

The series begins Saturday with "The Defiant Ones," which was released in 1958. Poitier stars as one of two convicts -- one black, one white -- who elude capture while handcuffed together.

The second film, "A Raisin in the Sun," released in 1961, will be viewed Feb. 16. The film tells the story of Walter Lee Younger (Poitier), who struggles with his life situation as he shares a tiny apartment with his wife, son, sister and mother. His outlook is bleak until his family receives an unexpected windfall.

"A Patch of Blue" will conclude the series on Feb. 23. The 1965 film, also starring Shelley Winters, tells the story of a black man who befriends a blind white girl and begins to show her the city through his eyes.

For information, call Winchester Cultural Center at 455-7340.

The first 500 women to enter will receive "Romance" bags from Party Gals valued at $30 each.

Brandon Beemer from NBC Daytime's "Days of Our Lives," and Mark Cameron Wystrach and Emily Harper from NBC's "Passions" are scheduled to appear.

"American Storm," America's hottest male revue, will perform a special show twice on the main stage.

The Las Vegas Women's Fair will feature businesses offering services to women, including shopping, health, nutrition, weight loss, fitness, financial information, counseling, cosmetics, home interiors, meal preparation and more.
