Commissioner to announce city updates

Henderson Planning Commissioner Debra March will be the guest speaker at the next Henderson Chamber of Commerce network breakfast Feb. 20.

The breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. at the Half Shell restaurant, 30 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway. Reservations for the event are required and space is limited. The cost is $20 per person. Checks must be made out to the Half Shell restaurant.

EDUCATION

Mexican artist to exhibit collection

The Heritage Center at Nevada State College will present "Nuestra Identidad" (Our Identity), an art collection by Maricela Alvarado, whose work includes images of Mexican heritage.

Born in Mexico City, Alvarado has more than 27 years of experience in plastic arts. From 1984 to 2004, she exhibited individually and collectively in Mexico and the United States.

The pieces will be on exhibition from Feb. 15 to March 15 at the Heritage Center, located in Room 110 at 311 Water St. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

The Heritage Center is a conduit for creating an open campus embodying the principles of respect, openness, tolerance, and mutual understanding among all members of the Nevada State College community. Exhibits and events aim to promote awareness and appreciation for the contributions of all races, cultures, lifestyles, and religions.

UNLV seeks volunteers for robotics contest

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology and the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering at UNLV are looking for volunteers to help out at the FIRST Robotics Competition Las Vegas Regional March 29-31.

More than 2,000 high school students from across the country will participate in the competition, which highlights science and engineering.

Locals can get deal on 'Producers' preview

Local residents can purchase special $60 preview tickets for "The Producers" at the Paris Las Vegas for shows running through Wednesday.

The show begins at 8 p.m. each night and is dark Sunday.

Written by Mel Brooks, "The Producers" follows two Broadway producers hoping to collect on millions by producing the biggest show flop on Broadway. David Hasselhoff appears as the flamboyant director unwittingly chosen to participate in the scheme.

Tickets can be purchased by calling the Paris Las Vegas Box Office at (877) 374-7469, or by visiting parislasvegas.com. Group tickets can be purchased for groups of 15 or more by calling 800-828-3830.

Discount tickets on sale for George Wallace

From now until Feb. 14, locals can buy tickets to see comedian George Wallace's 10 p.m. show for $10 each.

Reservations must be made in advance with a valid local ID. The promotion is valid only for the first 100 tickets per night.

Fashion show coming to Lake Las Vegas

Moonbeams' will host its third annual trunk show at MonteLago Village Feb. 10, featuring the Sophia & Chloe Jewelry Spring 2007 collection and designer Nathalie Sherman.

The event will feature live entertainment, with special performances by The Broadway Bound Divas, Broadway star Jodie Langel, Patrick Leveque and the Las Vegas Tenors.

The trunk show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at MonteLago Village. It is free and open to the public. Montelago Village is located at 45 Via Brianza, Suite 100 in MonteLago Village. For more information, call 565-9936.

AARP offers help with taxes

Volunteers from the American Association of Retired Persons will offer residents age 50 and older free assistance with personal income tax form preparation and electronic filing at five city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services senior centers beginning in February.

Advance appointments are required at all locations. Recipients are expected to bring a copy of their 2005 return and all of their applicable 2006 paperwork to the appointment. Call one of the centers between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays to schedule an appointment.
