Scoring a legacy
Musical Arts Society director approaching 40 years at the helm

For the past 38 years, Doug Peterson, who will turn 81 Thursday, has been the music director of the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society, a nonprofit organization that performs choral and orchestra masterworks, musical productions and chamber concerts.

SNMAS is the umbrella organization for three performing groups -- the Musical Arts Chorus, a large community chorus; the Musical Arts Singers, a vocal chamber ensemble of semiprofessional singers; and the Musical Arts Orchestra.

2,000-foot climb gets instructor warmed up for day

Every morning at 8, Marcel Barel grabs his skis and climbs up the steepest slope at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort in Lee Canyon.

"For a guy 21 years old, in great shape that would be a great feat," said ski instructor Timmy Meagher.
