Marilyn Thieme, a bilingual special education teacher at Herron and Culley elementary schools, put together a teaching plan to give Spanish-speaking parents the skills to succeed.
"We make an appointment and I teach them how to teach their children," she said.
Thieme served as a facilitator at one of the first local schools to become involved in Inclusive Schools Practices, an initiative of the Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education. To help train teachers, she holds sessions on nights and weekends in her home, with as many as 25 educators in attendance.
"I set up a screen and projector and lots of chairs and make dinner or lunch. Sometimes, we are still planning and learning at two in the morning," Thieme said.
The Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education named Thieme its February Teacher of the Month for her commitment to addressing the instructional needs of all students.
