Organizations perhaps know it takes a big name to draw attention to their biggest fundraisers of the year. That's why the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas has secured Candace Bushnell as its featured speaker at the Women's Philanthropy annual United Luncheon of the UJC Jewish Federations of Las Vegas.
The luncheon is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m Thursday at the Wynn Las Vegas.
The event is part of United Jewish Community's Dollar-A-Day initiative and is open to all women who pledge a minimum gift of $365. Residents can RSVP to 732-0556.
The federation, with offices at 2317 Renaissance Drive, is a humanitarian group similar to United Way. It supports more than 30 programs aimed at helping the less fortunate.
Bushnell is a best-selling author, whose column in the New York Observer spawned the "Sex and the City" book and hit HBO series. Her books also include "Four Blondes," "Trading Up," and "Lipstick Jungle."
The luncheon also will feature a gift drawing and silent auction, as well as a fashion show.
"This event was created to entertain the women and thank them for their involvement, while informing them of the important work we do," said Heidi Sarno Straus, Women's Philanthropy chairwoman. "If you had to choose any single ladies' event to attend this year, this is it."
Two-thirds of the money raised by the luncheon, as well as other, smaller events in Las Vegas, will stay in the community, according to organizers.
In 2005, the federation raised $3 million, and last year it raised $4 million.
Over the past 30 years, members raised more than $42 million to support Jewish causes in Las Vegas, Israel and 60 countries around the world.
