The Winchester Players will begin its spring session today with a new, 12-week program at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
Classes for beginner actors, age 9 through 19, are from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The advanced actors join the class on Wednesdays. Children ages 6 to 8 learn about theater from 4 to 7 p.m. on Fridays. Adults rehearse 7 to 8 p.m.
Classes end in April with two performances. Beginner and advanced students will perform "Greasie," a take on the musical set in the 1950s.
"Young Rascalz: A New Musical" will showcase the talents of the 6- to 8-year-olds.
The children's classes are $80. Adults pay $50 to enroll.
Warren-Walker to hold open house
Parents interested in enrolling their children at Warren-Walker Green Valley Academy may attend an open house from 8 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 20.
The event will be held at the lower school, kindergarten through fourth-grade, at 2150 Windmill Parkway in Henderson.
The open house for the upper school and preschool will occur at 1165 Sandy Ridge Ave. in Henderson.
Students and faculty will be on hand to answer questions and provide tours.
ENTERTAINMENT
Philharmonic plans family concert
The Las Vegas Philharmonic will present its annual family concert by performing "Peter and the Wolf" and Beethoven's Fifth at 7 p.m. Saturday.
In addition, the Philharmonic will play various popular movie tunes.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children ages 3 to 12.
Tickets are on sale at the UNLV Box Office, which can be reached at 895-2787.
Family packs of four tickets are $25.
Children 5 and under are admitted free.
Flamenco music, dance explored
Local group The Spirit of Flamenco will perform Flamenco music and dance at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Winchester Cultural Arts Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
The group performs a style of dancing that originated in the Andalusia region in southern Spain.
The performance is part of Clark County Parks and Recreation's World Vibration series. General admission is $10 and children and seniors pay $7.
Chamber Symphony to celebrate 21 years
The Nevada Chamber Symphony celebrates 21 years of musical memories at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.
The event is free and open to the public.
Jazz group pays tribute to trumpet player
The Nevada Jazz Orchestra will play the songs of late trumpet player Maynard Ferguson at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
"Remember Maynard" will feature original pieces played by Ferguson's orchestra. The Nevada Jazz Orchestra will perform the songs with a 17-piece big band.
General admission is $17, $12 for seniors and students, and Jazz Society and Guitar Society members pay $8.
Hungarian group dances into UNLV
The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble will perform various folk dances in concert at 8 p.m. Jan. 18 at Artemus Ham Concert Hall.
The group's choreography is based on authentic Hungarian dances, some dating back hundreds of years. The dancers will perform with both the Folk Orchestra and the Gypsy Orchestra.

Office offers free glaucoma screenings
Eleven Vision Source offices in Las Vegas and Henderson will offer free glaucoma screenings Jan. 22 to 27. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Glaucoma symptoms can be detected only through an eye exam. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, it is the third leading cause of blindness in the United States and has caused blindness in 120,000 people.
The foundation recommends all high-risk candidates be screened, including black people over the age of 40; people over the age of 60, especially Latinos who are at a greater risk; diabetics; anyone who has had a serious eye injury and anyone with a family history of glaucoma.
