BLOOD DRIVE

Leisure Service Center looking for donors

Veterans Memorial Leisure Service Center plans a community blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at its location, 101 Pavilion Center Drive (next to Palo Verde High School).

Donors will receive a pair of Galaxy movie tickets and a coupon for a free Messy Sundae from Sammy's Woodfired Pizza.

"Donating blood only takes about one hour and it saves lives," said Kelcey West, Senior Donor Recruiter for United Blood Services. "We pride ourselves on working to make a positive difference in the community, and working with our community centers is a great opportunity to do that."

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.

Walk-ins are welcome but donors may schedule an appointment by calling 349-2924 or visiting www.bloodhero.com and entering VMLC as the sponsor code.

SAFETY

Free workshops planned for parents

The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites parents to three free workshops designed to educate them about the potential dangers of the Internet to children and what precautions adults can take to protect their families.

Workshops are set for 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 28, March 28 and April 25, at Brinley Community School, 6150 Smoke Ranch Road.

The sessions will be held in collaboration with Nevada Child Seekers and the Metropolitan Police Department. Pre-registration is required.

For more information and to register, call 229-2642.

New program seeks foster parents

A new program to help foster children with special needs in the Clark County School District is looking for surrogate parents.

The Surrogate Parent Initiative will pair foster children with volunteer parents, who will serve as education advocates for the students during school meetings and for other student/teacher issues.

The program is sponsored by Clark County Legal Services.

The initiative will launch Jan. 26 with an informational meeting and lunch from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Clark County Legal Services, 800 S. Eighth St.

Training to be a surrogate is necessary, but is flexible and can be done on an individual basis. To attend the lunch or for additional information, call 386-1070, Ext. 124, or visit www.laurierichardsonchildadvocate.com.
