Thanks to DeAnn Sheehan, a special education teacher at Lunt Elementary School, families at the school have a Parent Resource Center where they can borrow books, games and videos and receive food, clothing, toiletries and household items.
The 18-year veteran of the Clark County School District opened the center a year ago. She estimates that 50 families have received assistance there.
"Many of our parents work several jobs to make ends meet, yet they make donations to the Family Resource Center, too." Sheehan said. "They are proud to donate their child's outgrown clothing when they can."
The center is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is staffed by a bi-lingual teacher and parent volunteers. Sheehan said it is "her baby" and she often spends vacations and weekends stocking the center and visiting garage sales for low-cost items to donate. Donations of gently used clothing, blankets, coats and toiletries are accepted at the school, located at 2710 Harris St.
The Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education recognized Sheehan as its January Teacher of the Month for her commitment to addressing the instructional needs of all students through inclusive practices.
