Restoring pride
Sunrise area benefits from Graffiti Awareness Day

"We're trying to invest in neighborhood pride," County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani said. For her, this meant showing up on an already sweltering Saturday morning to help paint over graffiti in her district for the county's Graffiti Awareness Day. Giunchigliani is responsible for District E, which contains the Sunrise Manor area and portions of west Las Vegas. County Commissioners Susan Brager and Lawrence Weekly also pitched in.

The cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson also participated in the effort.

Junior tennis players make impact at event
Locals win titles at national tournament

More than 500 junior tennis players competed at the annual United States Tennis Association Intermountain Summer Sectional tournament in Denver on June 12-17, and there were plenty of Las Vegas area players making an impact at what is considered the largest and most prestigious USTA tournament of the year.

Southern Nevadans who won championships at the event include: Pascal Nilsson of Las Vegas in the boys 12 singles event; Gabrielle Smith of Henderson in the girls 12 singles; Kristofer Yee of Las Vegas in the boys 14 singles; Chrissy Uriarte of Las Vegas in the girls 16 singles; Nilsson and Nicholas Mahlangu of Henderson in the boys 12 doubles; Kimberly Yee of Las Vegas in the girls 12 doubles; and Tiffany Taveres of Las Vegas in the girls 14 doubles.

SOCCER: Making history
Under-12 girls team wins regional title

Local soccer club Neusport didn't need its under-12 girls team to win a regional championship in order to expand its record of consistent success.

In the last 10 years, the club has won more than 40 state championships, five U.S. Club Soccer Regional titles and took the top prize in more than 100 tournaments in Southern Nevada and beyond.
