HELP of Southern Nevada is accepting school supplies for children who will be returning to classes in August.
Items needed are backpacks, crayons, pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, loose leaf paper, calculators, tissues, hand sanitizer and calculators. Distribution of school supplies will begin in August.

Leadership training offered for teens
The Leadership Camp Brings Teens Together Organization will host a camp on Aug. 12-16 at Camp Lee Canyon. Issues Concerning Adolescents of Nevada will host the camp for children and teens, ages 11 to 17. ICAN is an organization charged with addressing the challenges facing today's youth.
The cost for the five-day camp is $150 and includes food, lodging, workshops, speakers, a T-shirt and materials and activities, including a dance, campfires and a talent show.

Liberace Foundation seeks pianist entries
The Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts has announced the 2007 annual Liberace Piano Competition. Applications are being accepted from both amateur and professional pianists, who are invited to perform in showmanship and classical categories.
The competition will be Aug. 12, with live piano auditions at the Liberace Museum, 1775 E. Tropicana Ave. A Sept. 9 event will feature the Competitor's Showcase, and the Liberace Piano Competition finals are set for Sept. 16. Showmanship competitors will perform on Liberace's rhinestone piano.

Filmmakers needed for 48-hour project
The 48-Hour Film Project gives amateur filmmakers the opportunity to direct and shoot a film over two days and see the finished product on the big screen.
The contest begins Aug. 3. Teams will receive a character, prop, line of dialogue and a genre to get them started. Finished products will be due Aug. 5.
To participate, teams must register online at www.48hourfilm.com/lasvegas. There are a limited number of registration slots.

The winning local team will compete against other films to represent Las Vegas at a national screening and will compete for additional prizes.

Popovich show delayed at Winchester
Gregory Popovich's pet comedy show that was to be held at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, on Thursday has been delayed until August.
Popovich and his pets recently made it to the final stages of the television show "America's Got Talent" and will not be able to perform as scheduled. The show has been postponed until Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Singers sought for chorus openings
The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society invites singers from around the valley to audition for the Musical Arts Chorus and Orchestra.
Chorus rehearsals will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sundays starting Aug. 26 inside UNLV's Beam Music Center, Room 159. There are openings for all voice parts.

Road work under way on Mountain Vista
Mountain Vista Street, north of Sunset Way to Whitney Mesa Drive, will incur lane restrictions to allow for extensive road improvements during the next several months.
The road work is part of a six-month project extending along Sunset Road to Stephanie Street. The project will result in wider travel lanes and connection to U.S. Highway 95.

Group headed to Shakespearean Fest
The Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, has scheduled an overnight trip for ages 50 and older to Cedar City for the 2007 Utah Shakespearean Festival.
A motorcoach will depart from the center at 8 a.m. on Oct. 11 and return at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 12. The price is $168 per person for a double room and $210 for a single room and includes transportation and show tickets. The deadline for payment is Sept. 10.

Group to see Dead Sea Scrolls
The Brandeis University National Woman's Committee and the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada are planning an Oct. 8-11 bus trip to San Diego to view the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition at the Museum of Natural History in Balboa Park.
