ART

Artwork explores desert landscape

The Quiet Places Art Space, 22 Water St., will display the photographs and watercolors of five local artists depicting desert landscape and native plants through April 17.

"Botanical Art Blooms" features the work of Gary Reese, Fred Sigman, Julie Draper, Roulla Karampetsou and Donald Davidson.

Quiet Places' hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on most weekdays.

Chamber launches spotlight program

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce recently launched its Spotlight and Member Discount programs to offer new ways for chamber members' businesses to benefit from free or no-cost marketing exposure.

With the Spotlight Program, members can post their advertisement to the chamber's Web site for free. Ads will go through a rotation, with each ad guaranteed four facings each day, every day of the year. The chamber's Web site receives 15,000 hits a day.

For $250 per year, members can upgrade to the Deluxe Spotlight Program and can upload a logo and direct link to the company's Web site.

The Member Discount is free to member businesses and allows members to post coupons for their products and services in the discounts section of the Web site.

Sewing guild plans all-night sew-athon

The Las Vegas Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will hold an all-night sew-athon beginning at 7:30 p.m. April 13 at Hancock Fabrics at 9850 S. Maryland Parkway.

The event will feature sewing demonstrations and will offer the opportunity for people to bring in their unfinished products.

The event is free, but an RSVP is required. Call 263-9302 or 360-9491 by April 4 to reserve a spot.

Therapist offers parenting class

Marriage and family therapist and parent/child relationship specialist Lisa Dunning will speak at 7 p.m. March 27 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Dunning will discuss ways to improve the parent/child relationship and how to raise a happy, successful and productive child. She will teach parents the difference between punishment and discipline, explore various types of parenting styles and how to communicate effectively with your partner and child.

The event is free and open to the public. Dunning will sign copies of "Good Parents Bad Parenting" after the lecture.

Reverend presents higher way class

The Rev. Jim Serada will present a Vernon Study Group on the topic The Mystic Path to Freedom at 7 p.m. March 27 at Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway.

The Art Institute hosts fantasy art exhibit

The Art Institute, along with Sony Online Entertainment, will host The Masters of Fantasy Art: A Tribute to Keith Parkinson.

The exhibit is open through April 2 at The Art Institute of Las Vegas, 2350 Corporate Circle.

The exhibit displays the convergence of fine art and technology with artwork by seminal artist Keith Parkinson and his work "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

The late Parkinson influenced the artistic work for "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes," a multiplayer online role-playing game that launched in January.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Teens get information on future goals

Teens who are looking to get information on higher education, goals and life after high school are invited to attend Whitney Recreation Center's Teen Conference from 5 to 7:30 p.m. April 26.

The free event will take place at the Whitney Recreation campus at 5712 E. Missouri Ave.

Students and parents can attend 20-minute workshops and discussions with higher education and trade school representatives to learn how to plan for the future.

Representatives include the Community College of Southern Nevada, Consumer Credit Counseling, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors' Authority, the Academy of Healing Arts, Lincoln College of Technology and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Gear Up program.

Scintas to sing on behalf of HACA

The Scintas will donate half of every ticket sold for their 7 p.m. show on April 27 to support the Henderson Allied Community Advocates Endowment.

Tickets must be purchased through the Leadership Henderson Class of 2006 in order for the profits to go toward HACA.

The price is $68 per person and include a meet and greet with the Scintas after the show.

The Scintas perform at the Sahara.

Hot Club performs music at CCSN

The Community College of Southern Nevada Henderson campus will begin its Spring 2007 Cultural Series on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the C building, room 133.

The Hot Club of Las Vegas performs the music of Django Reinhardt, Bireli Lagrene, The Rosenberg Trip and other Gypsy jazz music past and present.

Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

FUNDRAISER

Models still needed for ballet fashion show

Teen models are needed for the Teen Fashion Show 2007, presented by the Nevada Ballet Theatre and Nordstrom.

Tickets also are available for the fundraising event.

Participants in the fashion show must be between 13 and 18 years old, sell two brunch tickets at $100 each to family and/or friends and attend one model training workshop and scheduled fitting.

The brunch and show begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Fashion Show mall. Tickets are $100 each and will benefit the Nevada Ballet Theatre. For information, call Jeanne Frederick at 243-2623, ext. 225.

Black Mountain celebrates 50 years

The Black Mountain Golf and Country Club will celebrate 50 years of serving the Henderson community with a spring fling cocktail celebration at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The members-only event will feature a cocktail reception and drawing. Members will have the opportunity to stay and participate in a casino night.

Sunrise Hospital offers nutrition tips

In honor of National Nutrition Month, Sunrise Hospital has released five ways to cut 100 calories per day. According to research, for every extra 100 calories a person consumers each day, 10 pounds of weight are added to the body each year.

Reduce cheese consumption. Skipping cheese on sandwiches or hamburgers cuts 100 calories.

Add two pounds of muscle. This burns 100 calories per day.

Eat before shopping, especially when shopping for food.

Try to walk to visit a co-worker rather than e-mail.

Stand, don't sit. Standing for 50 minutes is equal to 100 calories burned.
