LEGISLATURE
Toll roads bill introduced
The long-awaited legislative bill that would authorize municipalities and the Nevada Department of Transportation to "construct, improve, maintain, and operate toll roads and bridges" was introduced by Assemblymen Joe Hardy, R-Boulder City, and Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, on March 19.
Among other provisions in AB 417, the bill mandates revenue bonds or other forms of revenue must be earmarked only for the tolling project and that an alternate route must be available for drivers who don't want to use the toll road.
The issue is seen by city officials as key to expediting construction of the $250 million second-phase of the Boulder City Bypass that would go around the city and take with it a two or three-fold increase in traffic expected once the Colorado River Bridge is completed.
RESTAURANTS
A&W Root Beer stand closed, but reopens
On March 2, Southern Nevada Health District inspectors closed A&W Root Beer at 1410 Nevada Highway because its water heater wasn't operating at a proper temperature.
According to district officials, on March 3, the establishment re-opened illegally, but was shut down again because it hadn't corrected the problem properly.
After the business correctly fixed the problem, it was allowed to re-open.
