Hoops for Christ event set for May 17-19

Las Vegas Sports magazine, Sho-Shot Footwear and the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will present the second annual Hoops for Christ Basketball Championships on May 17-19 at local gym sites to be announced. Tournament to help fight Down syndrome

The annual Rhodes Homes Charity Golf Tournament benefiting the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada will be held at 1 p.m. May 17 at Rhodes Ranch Golf Club, 20 Rhodes Ranch Parkway. Cost is $225 for individuals or $1,500 for corporate groups with a $300 tee sponsorship available.

Rhodes Ranch tourney to benefit education

The seventh annual Tee Up for Kids Charity Golf Tournament benefiting the Public Education Foundation will be held May 18 at Rhodes Ranch Golf Club, 20 Rhodes Ranch Parkway.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. with a shotgun scramble start at 7:30 a.m. Playing spots are available for $300 and foursomes are $1,200.

NLV Chamber tourney set for TPC

The 10th annual North Las Vegas Chamber Foundation Golf Tournament will start at 7:30 a.m. May 21 at Tournament Players Club Summerlin.

The foundation has distributed thousands of dollars in support of North Las Vegas elementary and middle school libraries, teacher grants, academic scholarships and business education programs, and the golf tournament is one of its main fundraisers.

NFL player's benefit tournament planned

Baltimore Ravens player Jonathan Ogden will host the Jonathan Ogden Foundation's sixth annual celebrity golf tournament weekend on May 24-26 in Las Vegas. Events include the tournament at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort's Wolf Course on May 25.

Itty Bitty Tae Kwon Do classes offered

RODEO

UNLV team to compete at South Point

The UNLV Rodeo team will be competing to try to earn qualifications to the College National Finals at the South Point Equestrian Center at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. See students compete in nine different events including bull riding, steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing.

TENNIS

NTA, USTA event distributes awards

The Nevada Tennis Association's annual USTA meeting and awards event was held April 24 at Hannah's restaurant.

Award winners included: Marty Hennessey, the George MacCall Lifetime Achievement Award; the Darling Center, Facility of the Year; the Andre Agassi Foundation, USTA Organization of the Year; Cindy Gates, Darleen Lang Volunteer of the Year Award; and Tim Blenkiron, Developmental Coach of the Year.

Junior award winners included: McKay Novak and Flintan Collins, Rookies of the Year; Trenton Alenik and Julia Baltas, Most Improved Players of the Year; Kimberly Yee and Jeff Vongman, Most Promising Players; Mani Trump and Sarah Toti, Sportsmanship; Canynce Boney, the Josh Muterspaw Award; and the Breland family, Family of the Year.

YMCA opens youth program

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is holding a new USTA tennis program, 36/60, for youth ages 4 to 7 from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays running through June 2. Class sizes are limited to eight students and racquets are provided.

WRESTLING

Durango YMCA to hold Saturday sessions

The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, will hold a wrestling session from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturdays through June 9 for children ages 6 to 9, and from 3 to 4 p.m. for children ages 10 to 13.
