EVENT RAISES FUNDS FOR DIABETES RESEARCH

More than 1,000 Clark County residents took part in the American Diabetes Association's Step Out to Fight Diabetes event on Oct. 20. They raised more than $100,000 in support of the association's mission: to prevent and eventually find a cure for diabetes.

"Thanks to the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of our walkers, volunteers, and sponsors, Step Out to Fight Diabetes was a resounding success," said Darla Carpenello, event chairperson. "The money they raised will help fund the American Diabetes Association's balanced programs of research, education and advocacy; all with a common goal to improve the lives of people with diabetes."

Nearly 21 million Americans have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million of them have been diagnosed, 6.2 million are unaware that they have the disease.

Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in America, killing more people than AIDS or breast cancer. More than 213,000 Americans each year will die from its complications. To date, the American Diabetes Association has raised and donated more than $300 million for diabetes research.
