HENDERSON PLANNING COMMISSION

Commissioner Terry Mannion was not present for the Nov. 15 Henderson Planning Commission meeting. Chairman Dan Shaw, Vice Chairman Craig Burr and Commissioners Joe Belingheri, George Bochanis, Debra March and Sam Bateman were in attendance.

LAW OFFICE GETS ILLUMINATED WALL AND MONUMENT SIGNS

The commission voted 5-1 in favor of applicant Pecos Serene Investments LLC to allow illuminated signs at the Pecos Serene Office Building at 3333 E. Serene Ave.

The owners of Peel Brimley law offices said the signs are needed for the two tenants who rent office space from them.

A few members of the Serene Country Estates Action Committee voiced concerns about the signs sitting too close to the entrance of their residential neighborhoods.

Richard Peel said they were willing to turn the signs off by 10 p.m.

Belingheri was the lone vote against approval.

This was the final action by the Planning Commission.

DAY LABOR SERVICE NEEDS TO FIND NEW HOME

The Planning Commission denied an appeal by Able Body Labor to change the use category with a 6-0 vote.

A spokesman for the day labor service said the use category it was under was a nonprofit rehabilitation center with full-time on-site education and training of people with disabilities. About 30 to 50 workers come to the office by 6 a.m. and are either assigned work or leave the premises by about 8 a.m.

Shaw said he had a problem with this type of business being in a neighborhood shopping center.

"How do you make sure 10 to 15 people don't wait on the corner to find someone to hire them?" Shaw said.

BAR WILL BE BUILT LESS THAN 1,500 FEET FROM CHURCH

The commission unanimously approved a request to build a Chili's restaurant at the northwest corner of Atlantic Avenue and West Lake Mead Parkway even though it is less than the 1,500 feet required from a place of worship.

John S. Bagwell, associate pastor of Giving Life Ministries, 416 Perlite Way, argued that he didn't want a bar so close to his church.

The restaurant with bar, which the commission said it treats different from a tavern, is only about 5 feet short of the required distance. It also would be on the opposite sides of Lake Mead Parkway. Bochanis said the commission considers major arterials with six to eight lanes as an adequate buffer.
