TERRIBLE 400 DESERT RACE

* For the sixth year, Henderson will host the Terrible 400 Desert Race, a 400-mile off-road event. The start and finish line and main spectator area will be off U.S. Highway 95 in the Eldorado Valley. Race runs from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. THE DA VINCI EXPERIENCE

* More than 60 working replicas of Leonardo da Vinci's inventions are on display at the Henderson Convention Center. Many of the inventions are hands-on, and visitors will be encouraged to try them out. Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for students or military. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through March 2. 200 S. Water St. 267-2171 or www.hendersonlive.com.

BIRD WATCHING

* Explore the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve with a knowledgeable guide from 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday. Wear good walking shoes and bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. Free. 2400 B Moser Drive. 267-4180.

HIKING AT LAKE MEAD

* The National Park Service is sponsoring a series of hikes throughout December. This weekend, rangers will lead tours of Teddy Bear Cholla Forest, St. Thomas and Tombstone Rock. Reservations required. Leave dogs at home unless otherwise noted. For information, call the Alan Bible Visitors Center at 293-8990.
