Austi C. Bankston, 13, was selected to receive a scholarship from Junior Giants Scholars. She will be awarded the funds after graduation from high school.

Austi, an eighth-grader at Escobedo Middle School, was one of 10 students to get the scholarship. Entries were received from more than 75 of the baseball club's regional leagues.

She was invited for a pre-game reception and honored at a home plate ceremony at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Aug. 11.

Austi also received the Cleopatra Vaughns scholarship, which will pay for her travel for the next five years to Junior Giants Scholar events.

Austi is a cheerleader at her middle school and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She's also a member of her school's student council, a volunteer for the Cancer Society, an honor student and a member of the honor orchestra.

After high school, Austi hopes to attend Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, earn a bachelor's degree in chemistry, then attend medical school at Harvard University to earn a master's degree in health policy with the intention to eventually become a surgeon.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Bankston of Las Vegas.

Russell Campise, 18, a 2007 graduate of Arbor View High School, recently completed his Naval recruit training in Great Lakes, Ill. He enlisted in the Navy on April 26, and left for recruit training command Aug. 21.

His Pass in Review took place Oct. 19, and his division, Honor Division 363, was awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Award for their outstanding achievement.

Campise is currently attending A School in Great Lakes. After completion, he will be stationed at Naval Base San Diego and has been assigned to guided missile cruiser USS Antietam.

He is the son of Jacqueline and Clay Holbrook of Las Vegas.
