The View Neighborhood Newspapers are celebrating.

In only the paper's second year of competing in the Nevada Press Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest, the View continued last year's winning pace by taking home 24 awards, including five first-place finishes.

The Views compete in the NPA's Class 5, which encompasses weekly newspapers with a circulation of 20,000 or more. Categories include design, writing, editorial cartoons, headline writing, photography and advertising.

"The View staff works hard all year long to find compelling stories that reflect what's going on in its 14 community editions around the valley," said Jeannette Carrillo, managing editor of the Views. "With awards for writing and photos, plus layout and headline writing, it's clear that the View is dedicated to presenting a complete package that tempts readers to pick up the newspaper and read it all the way through."

Nevada journalists met at the annual convention and awards banquet held Sept. 29 in Reno.

Standout categories for the View included a first-place win for Best Special Section (Editorial). View staff writer Lauren Romano and former photo chief Shelly Donahue spearheaded the special section dedicated to activities in the northwest part of the valley.

Other first-place awards included Best Page One Design and Best Headline Writing-Weekly Newspapers. View Assistant Managing Editor Ginger Meurer took home the headline-writing honor.

In Editorial Cartooning, artist Mike Miller swept the category (first, second and third place) with his humorous takes on the daily life of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman in the comic strip Sir Oscar. Donahue also won first place for Best Sports Photo.

"The Views' focus on community journalism has served it well in the Nevada Press Association competition," said Geoff Schumacher, Stephens Media's director of community publications. "The judges clearly recognized that we do a great job of letting our readers know about all the interesting things happening in their neighborhoods."

The Nevada Press Association, the trade organization for the state's newspapers, represents eight daily and 33 weekly newspapers in Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region of Northern California.
