Many art galleries along Water Street in downtown Henderson closed last June to make room for Cherry Development's mixed-use venture. The art spaces have returned, and the artists and gallery owners have hopes for the future of the arts district.
PLAZA GALLERY
Quiet Places Photography has reopened with a new name and a new promise.
"This isn't going to be a quiet place," co-owner Gary Reese said of the Plaza Gallery.
Co-owner Susanne Reese said they named the space the Plaza Gallery because they are so close to the Henderson Events Plaza and they plan to work with the plaza often.
The gallery, at 223 Water St., opened in August. Susanne said that after being told in March that they were going to have to move out, they worked hard to find a space on Water Street.
"It was such a challenge to move from 2,800 square feet to 700," Susanne said.
The Plaza Gallery is open most afternoons and evenings between Wednesday and Sunday and during all Events Plaza events. To make an appointment or check hours, call 438-4278.
WATER STREET GALLERY
Fred Sigman, former co-owner of Quiet Places Photography, has opened the Water Street Gallery, 155 S. Water St., in the Meridian Building.
The Water Street Gallery is a two-story, 2,800-square-foot facility with the gallery on the first floor and studios, labs and offices on the second.
Sigman said he will rent gallery space to artists who are looking to have their own gallery for a few months.
Although the photographer said he is open to any kind of medium for his gallery, "The work that's shown here has to fill a mission statement we have. The art has to be made by individuals who also see themselves as activists. People who have something to say with their work."
The Water Street Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call 253-0800 or e-mail info@thewaterstreet-gallery.com.
CITY LIGHTS
It was only a few months after the City Lights Artists' Co-op and Gallery expanded by opening a second space just for crafters on Water Street when the city of Henderson told them both galleries would have to move.
"We were a little concerned; we just got all these new members that were crafters," gallery director Merle Blair said.
About 20 members, mostly crafters, were lost in the move, although some new members have signed up since the doors reopened in July.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
