SEPTEMBER FIGURES JUMP 526 PERCENT WITH HANGAR

September 2007 building valuation figures shot up more than five-fold compared to the same month last year, largely because of a new hanger under construction by Scenic Airlines at the Boulder city Airport.

September 2006 saw total valuation of slightly more than $413,000 compared to this September, when the number stood at just under $2.2 million.

For the first nine months of 2006, total valuation was $22.8 million, but with $11.7 million in one-time solar farm valuation deducted from the total, this year's nine-month total was greater at $12.8 million.

In the housing segment, there were 19 new single-family homes valued at $4.4 million during the first nine months of 2007, compared to 11 new single-family homes and 18 apartment units valued at a combined total of $7.1 million for the same period in 2006.

FILM SOCIETY BECOMES LICENSED DVD DISTRIBUTOR

Officers of the Dam Short Film Society, the organization that runs the Dam Short Film Festival each year, announced recently that they've acquired the distribution rights to 25 short films, with 75 more to come.

President Lee Lanier said the DVD-sales system allows buyers to pick and choose any six films to be burned onto a one-of-a-kind DVD.

The film genres include comedy, drama, horror, science fiction, experimental, student, documentary, animation and Nevada-made.

DVDs intended for personal use cost $18, while a custom DVD intended for an educational setting, such as in schools, libraries and other places, costs $48.

Proceeds go to support the annual Dam Short Film Festival, with a percentage of the sales going to the filmmakers who made the films. Purchases can be made through the festival's Web site at www.damshortfilm.org.

NEVADA IN TOP THREE FOR IDENTITY THEFT COMPLAINTS

According to a recent report from the Federal Trade Commission, Nevada ranks No. 3 in the number of identity theft complaints far each 100,000 residents.

The FTC reported there were 120 complaints for every 100,000 residents in the Silver State. Ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, ahead of Nevada, were Arizona with 148 complaints, and the District of Columbia with 132.

LOCAL RACECAR DRIVER SPURS BOOK PROGRAM

Boulder City utility clerk Jim Petrie, a racecar driver at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring in his spare time, has kicked off his team's reading program this year by expanding it from one week per year to the entire school year.

H-Town Racing's program, Race to Success, provides an incentive for fifth-graders to read a minimum of 25 books, and in exchange, the youngsters are rewarded with Bullring tickets and a special Race to Success event at the speedway next spring.

The participating schools this year are Roundy and Sewell elementary schools, with a third school to be chosen soon.

In addition, H-Town Racing will make a $500 donation to each participating school's library.
