Thank you so much for featuring your article on neighborhood involvement (Oct. 2 View). The way I see it, we can't complain about things that happen in our communities and in our country if we don't try to change them! Five years ago, Sen. Barack Obama predicted the invasion would lead to the type of mess that we are in today. But instead of voting to fund the war, he has taken the responsibility to make a plan to end it!
My thoughts on the war are similar -- we are sending troops over to a country that has been fighting since the dawn of time. For us to send our boys over there to try to get Iraq back into shape simply will not work. We are sending money to help Iraqis, while our own country is in turmoil. We have intense poverty in the South because of Katrina; we have unresolved racial tensions; we have homeless people and homeless veterans who don't have roofs over their heads. What I want to know is, why are we over in that country fighting, when we can't even take care of the men and women who have served us to this date?
I think that we would be better served to spend our resources within our own country. I truly believe that this war was based on an agenda that was set up by the Bush administration. I have been volunteering my time at Obama's campaign office in Las Vegas, and I know that if we work together, we can resolve the issue in Iraq and focus back on the issues we need to fix at home. I would encourage others to do the same. I believe that it is truly time for us to stand up and make a change.
