FORMER CITY MANAGER NAMED MEMBER OF THE YEAR
Henderson Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization, named former Henderson City Manager Phil Speight Community Member of the Year on Oct. 10 during his retirement celebration at the Henderson Convention Center.
Speight was instrumental in the foundation's efforts to partner with the city and many of Henderson's organizations, including the United Way.
Speight, who had served as city manager for nearly 20 years, will begin working as chief of staff to Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., in Washington, D.C., in November.
This is the Henderson Community Foundation's first Community Member of the Year award.

ANOTHER INTERSTATE 15 INTERCHANGE IS ON THE WAY
It's been almost a month, and drivers near Interstate 15 and south of Blue Diamond Road are getting used to their new off-ramp at Silverado Ranch Boulevard. But drivers are looking toward the future, specifically the next interchange at Interstate 15 and St. Rose Parkway.
The interchange will open in June 2008, said Bob McKenzie, Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman.
FLOATING ICE RINK RETURNS TO LAKE LAS VEGAS
Intrawest's MonteLago Village and Lake Las Vegas Resort will construct a floating ice skating rink for the fourth consecutive year.
The rink will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 16 until Feb. 17.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for children, 12 years and younger and $8 each for groups of 20 or more.

LOCALS HOLD HELPING FOR THE HOLIDAYS EVENT
The fifth annual Helping for the Holidays open house hosted by Dave and Lisa Johnson and Lullaby Connection will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at 2440 High Vista Circle. Guests must bring a new, unwrapped toy or package of diapers. Donations are for the Lullaby Connection, Child Haven, Family to Family and the Clark County Health District. There will be carolers and a cookie buffet.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT
Project Homeless Connect is looking for additional volunteers for its Nov. 6 event, which will help the homeless in Southern Nevada. The 15th annual day-long event at Cashman Center, located at 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North, was formerly known as the Stand Down for the Homeless. It helps thousands of homeless people each year receive "a hand up, not a hand out."
Staffed by volunteers from local governments, charities, faith-based groups, shelters, businesses and others involved in ending and preventing homelessness, this event is coordinated by the Nevada Homeless Alliance and co-sponsored by the City of Las Vegas. Project Homeless Connect is free to people who are homeless. The event opens at 8 a.m.
