Steven Beyer, a freshman engineering major at the University of Portland, has been accepted into the university's honors program for the class of 2011.

Only 30 of 810 incoming freshmen were accepted into the program. Requirements are a 3.80 high school GPA and a score of at least 1300 on the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT), including a minimum of 630 on the verbal segment.

Beyer is a Henderson resident.

Mollie and Jackie Singer, 18-year-old twins who reside in Las Vegas, have been chosen by the board of trustees of the Caring Institute as two of the 2007 National Caring Award Young Adult winners.

The award is bestowed upon extraordinary young people who have used their lives for the betterment of others.

Mollie Singer learned she had diabetes at age 4. Diagnosed at a time when information about the disease was hard to find, she and her sister started a club to educate children about the disease and teach them how to watch out for their diabetic friends.

They named the group Diabetic Angels.

To further promote understanding of diabetes, Mollie and Jackie have met with President Bush, lobbied senators and testified before Congress.

They wrote a booklet, "The Road to a Cure," and organized walks that have collected over $500,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The sisters are talented singers who broadcast their message as a country duo.

The girls will be honored during an induction ceremony on Nov. 16 at the Frederick Douglass Museum and Hall of Fame for Caring Americans on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Dakota and Rhys Bertschy, along with their father, David, recently competed in the Victory in Vegas regional tae kwon do tournament at The Orleans.

All three won first place in the black belt sparring divisions.

They will travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the fall nationals at Disneyworld.

Rhys, 9, is a student at Staton Elementary School. Dakota, 14, is a student at Faith Lutheran Junior/Senior High School.

They train at Summerlin ATA Black Belt Academy.
