With cars speeding down streets, children can't play in their front yards, and backyards today really aren't big enough. But in Henderson, kids have a choice of more than 40 parks to swing, slide and run in.

Dominick Casey, superintendent of parks, said the goal is to provide as many parks as possible to make them accessible to all Henderson residents.

"We want everyone to have a park in walking distance," he said.

As new parks are built, community members are asked for input on facilities.

"The highest demand is for ball fields," Casey said. "I think if we built a field a day, it wouldn't be enough."

The city already has two new parks under construction and plans for many more.

Although residents will not move into Inspirada, a new master-planned community, until later this month, plans already are in place for nine new parks.

Open space is important to Inspirada, which is being built with the idea of new urbanism. Parks will serve as the center to every neighborhood, and all homes will be within 5 miles of a park.

"We want to provide a place for recreation, neighbors to get to know each other and kids to play," said Jeff Geen, senior vice president for Focus Property Group.
