Virtual High School history teacher William Nichols traveled to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia to attend a three-day competitive application seminar called Creating a Republic: From the Revolution to the Constitution during the summer. The program was led by Carol Berkin, presidential professor of history at Baruch College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. The seminar, sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, was attended by 27 teachers and focused on the struggle for independence.
TRUSTEES VOTE FOR MORE COMPENSATION
At the July 26 Clark County School District Board of School Trustees meeting, the trustees approved an increase in board compensation to a maximum of $750 per month. Each trustee can determine his or her maximum monthly compensation and has the option to decline compensation or donate it to a school of his or her choice. All compensation will be funded from the current Board of School Trustees budget.
HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES CARING AWARD
Burk High School, 4560 W. Harmon Avenue, received top honors from the National Center for Community of Caring. The high school received the 2007 Community of Caring Outstanding Secondary School Award and the 2007 Community of Caring Outstanding Secondary Administrator Award.
SAFE HAVENS HONORS CCSD
Safe Havens International honored the Clark County School District School Safety and Crisis Management Team with the Best Practices in School Safety International Award for its work in helping the school district prepare for emergency situations.
COX DONATES SCHOOL ITEMS
Cox Communications collected back-to-school items for children and teens at Olive Crest, a home for those in the foster care program in Southern Nevada. The items were donated on Aug. 21. Olive Crest is located at 6148 W. Sahara Ave.
FERTITTA STUDENTS HONORED IN WRITING CONTEST
Chauntee Kahele and Jaime Bustamante, both Fertitta Middle School seventh-grade students, were honored as national finalists in the Do the Write Thing Challenge Program. The initiative allows middle school students the chance to look at the impact of youth violence in their lives. Kahele and Bustamante wrote poems on what should be done to lessen the amount of violence in the world.
LOOKING FOR HISTORY BUFFS
The Clark County School District needs help in archiving its history. Community members are invited to submit memories and collectibles to the district's 50th Anniversary Committee. The committee especially needs elementary school yearbooks and short e-mailed recollections of population growth, events that changed the district, famous alumni, contributions of Las Vegas entertainers, and special programs, such as art, music and athletics. HOSPITAL GIVES OUT SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Southern Hills Hospital donated school supplies to Tanaka Elementary School. The hospital's Employee Advisory Committee held a back-to-school drive during the month of August, and collected markers, backpacks, hand sanitizers, glue sticks, scissors, math kits and other school items.
POLICE BUILDING DEDICATION HONORS NAMESAKE
A dedication ceremony for the new school police building took place on Aug. 25. The event honored namesake Lt. Dennis Carew Sr. The Dennis G. Carew Sr. School Safety Services Center is located at 120 Corporate Drive in Henderson. Carew served in various capacities over his time with the district including campus officer, sergeant, acting chief, assistant chief and lieutenant. The nearly 24,000-square-foot building is the new home to school police operational offices, training rooms and a dispatch center. An emergency management command center will be located on site next to dispatch for more efficient coordination of communications. The facility will also provide partnering opportunities with school attendance officers, local traffic task forces and other official entities.
