UNLV TO HOST FORMER U.N. AMBASSADOR

UNLV will present Andrew Young, former U.N. ambassador and civil rights activist, in a speaking engagement at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Doc Rando Hall. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture. Tickets are $25 for students, $50 for general admission and $100 for VIP. Call 255-3001.

UNLV TO PRESENT FREE LECTURES

UNLV's College of Liberal Arts will sponsor a lecture called What's Wrong With the Way Nevada Selects its Judges? -- A Legal and Policy Analysis at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Barrick Museum Auditorium. The lecture will be presented by professor Tuan Samahon.

A lecture called The Social Critique of Social Knowledge will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Barrick Museum Auditorium. The lecture will be presented by professor Sally Haslanger.

A lecture called Dancing Under Desert Stars: Ballroom in Las Vegas will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Barrick Museum Auditorium. The lecture will be presented by Amanda Haboush and Gail Michel-Parsons.

PROJECT SHERO TO HOST FUNDRAISER

Join Project Shero for its second annual fundraiser and scholarship drive, Over the Rainbow Dreams Do Come True, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the Platinum Hotel, 211 E. Flamingo Road.

GROUP TO DISCUSS SCOLIOSIS AT MEETING

The first meeting of the Las Vegas Scoliosis Association is planned for 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Children's Bone & Spine Surgery, 1525 E. Windmill Lane, Suite 201.

The local chapter is led by Dr. Jonathan F. Camp, a pediatric spine surgeon specializing in scoliosis. The association's intent is to serve as an outlet for support, education and guidance for those affected by the condition.

This first meeting is free and open to the public.

EXERCISE CREATIVITY AT WINCHESTER

Children can stretch their creativity without worrying about getting paint on their mother's curtains during the Young Artists in the Park workshop on Sept. 30. Children ages 4-6 can try out their artistic abilities outdoors from noon to 1:45 p.m., with ages 7-10 taking their turns from 2:15 to 4 p.m. at Winchester Cultural Center and Park, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Cost is $5 per person, which includes materials. Enrollment is limited. Deadline for registration is Sunday.

Participants will begin their afternoon with a sidewalk chalk activity and continue through stations such as artistically splattering paint Jackson Pollock-style, painting with their fingers, finding art in nature and rock decoration. Call 455-7340.

CANINE FESTIVAL SEEKS VENDORS

Clark County Parks and Recreation will present the 19th annual Strut Your Mutt at Dog Fanciers Park, 5800 E. Flamingo Road, on Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $2 or a bag of dry food, or gently used dog items.

Strut Your Mutt includes 15 canine-related contests and booths featuring pet health services, rescue groups, pet photography, clothing, dog toys, therapy and assistance dogs, eye care, insurance, grooming, boarding and pet sitting. Special attractions this year will include a short performance by Gregory Popovich's World Famous Popovich Comedy Pet Theater and demonstrations by Metro's K-9 dogs and Fly 'N Aces flyball club. A 10-foot-by-10-foot space is $30 for groups with nonprofit status and $60 for others. The application deadline is Oct. 22.
