SOCCER PLAYER TO ATTEND ELITE FLORIDA CAMP

Josh Sylva, 15, was recently named to the U.S. U-17 Men's National Soccer Team and will be attending residency camp in Brandenton, Fla., where he will stay at the elite IMG Academy. A sophomore at Centennial High School and leader of the Bulldogs team, Sylva will play fullback for the national team.

Over the past two years, Sylva has participated in all eight National Team events and has traveled to Mexico and Argentina with the team. He has been playing soccer since the age of 5 and also competed for the local Neusport FC team for four years.

SCHOOL TO HOST FENCING TOURNAMENT

The Dawson School will host the third annual Dawson Challenge Fencing Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament is the first of the United States Fencing Association 2007-08 season, a Regional Youth Circuit that serves as a qualifying path to the North American Cup series and the Summer National Championship competitions, to be held in July 2008.

Local fencers and 9-year-old twin sisters Andrea and Cassandra Dilibero were medal finalists at the 2007 Summer National Championships in Miami. Both are nationally ranked in their age group and they will be competing at the Dawson Challenge.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS TO HOST HOOPS LEAGUE

Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas will host a fall basketball league for fifth- through 10th-graders at two locations: at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell Road; and at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club in the Green Valley area, 2980 Robindale Road.

ADULT BASKETBALL LEAGUE STARTS TOMORROW

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites adult basketball players to participate in evening leagues beginning Wednesday and again on Jan. 2 and continuing for six weeks, plus playoffs. Coed players age 16 and older will play on Wednesdays at Brinley Middle School, 2480 Maverick St.

NJB REGISTRATION SET AT CENTENNIAL HILLS

The Southern Nevada chapter of National Junior Basketball will be holding registration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 27 at the Centennial Hills YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Road. The season will begin Dec. 1. Games will be played in northwest area high schools.

RED ROCK FENCING ANNOUNCES ACADEMY

The Red Rock Fencing Center at 5275 S. Arville St., Suite 332, is offering an introduction to fencing academy for youth ages 7-12 and adults from age 13 and up. The academy will run on the first three Mondays each month and will be led by coach Frank Van Dyke.

YOUTH ROLLER HOCKEY LEAGUE STARTS SATURDAY

The Las Vegas Roller Hockey Center will be holding another 10-week recreational youth coed roller hockey league for ages 6-15 starting Saturday. The cost is $135. There also are adult leagues that play Sunday through Thursday throughout the year.

BASEBALL TRAINING FACILITY PLANS GRAND OPENING

Frozen Ropes International Baseball and Softball Training Center now is open in Las Vegas, offering developmental programs for ages 3 and up at its 12,000-square-foot facility at 6667 Schuster St. Major league hitting coach Rick Down and Rich Rubel will be holding a grand opening event on Sept. 29 starting at 10 a.m., including open hitting time, raffles, demonstrations and more.

YMCA OFFERS TAE KWON DO FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS

The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, offers tae kwon do for ages 6 and up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Signups are held on the first Tuesday of each month. The cost is $61 plus the cost of the uniform.

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites boys and girls ages 3-14 to participate in fall Saturday soccer leagues that begin Oct. 20 and continue for six weeks at the following locations: Brinley Community School, 6150 Smoke Ranch Road; Gibson Community School, 3990 W. Washington Ave.; Rivera Community Center, 2900 E. Stewart Ave.; and Robison Community School, 4794 Harris Ave.
