CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MIXER PLANNED

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce will host a mixer from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Opportunity Village, 451 E. Lake Mead Parkway.

All chamber members and the public are invited to attend. The Henderson Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit, voluntary organization committed to promoting and supporting member businesses.

Swap Meet, Farmers Market planned for Saturday

The Green Valley Presbyterian Church Swap Meet and Farmers Market will be held from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the church's parking lot, 1798 Wigwam Parkway.

Many Henderson and Las Vegas Farmers Market vendors, including Tropical Sno of Nevada and featuring, ethnic foods, hand-crafted jewelry, leather items, wood carvings, etched glass and crafts, will be offered in addition to hundreds of gently used items for sale. Proceeds benefit youth programs.

PROJECT SHERO ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER

Project Shero, a nonprofit group aimed at educating and empowering women of all ages, will host a fundraiser this week.

The Over the Rainbow -- Dreams Do Come True scholarship drive and fundraising event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Platinum Hotel, located at the corner of Flamingo and Koval roads.

There will be jazz music, appetizers, a cash bar and a silent auction. Tickets are $35 in advance or $45 at the door. Sponsorship opportunities still are available.

GOVERNORS ARTS AWARDS NOMINATIONS DUE BY OCT. 5

The Nevada Arts Council and the governor's office invite nominations for the 28th annual Governor's Arts Awards to recognize and honor Nevadans who add to our quality of life today and ensure a strong cultural legacy for future generations.

Nominees and nominators must be current Nevada residents or organizations/businesses that work in and for the benefit of Nevada. Previous recipients of a Governor's Arts Award and current Nevada Arts Council staff, board, contractors or their immediate families are not eligible. Nomination packets must be received by 5 p.m. Oct. 5.

The Governors Arts Awards ceremony will be held this spring in Las Vegas. Date and location to be announced.

ONE BOOK HENDERSON WILL RUN THROUGH NOVEMBER

Henderson Libraries is encouraging all residents to read "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom and join the conversation throughout November.

One Book Henderson will include a variety of events during October and November hosted by Henderson Libraries and inspired by the book, including a speaking engagement by Albom on Oct. 14.

To ensure that all Henderson residents can participate, additional copies of "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" will be available at all four Henderson Libraries locations in various formats such as hardback, paperback, large print, Spanish and books on CD and cassette. The library also will offer extra copies of DVDs of "The Five People You Meet in Heaven."

Free copies of the book also will be available throughout the community in public gathering places such as coffee shops, hospitals, city recreation centers and more. Recipients of the free novels are encouraged to read their copy and pass it on.

ANNUAL BOWL-A-THON WILL BE HELD OCT. 13

The Southern Nevada Domestic Violence Task Force's 10th annual Bowl-A-Thon will be held from noon until 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive.

More than 25,000 new cases of domestic violence were filed in Clark County in 2006. Nationally, 3.3 million children are exposed to domestic violence in their homes each year. The Southern Nevada Domestic Violence Task Force is a group of local domestic violence advocates working to provide support to victims and families of the crime.

The cost of the event is $35 per bowler and includes three games, shoe rental and a T-shirt.

Money needed for shoes and socks

The Goodie Two Shoes Foundation is seeking monetary donations to provide more than 1,500 disadvantaged children, pre-selected from 18 Southern Nevada Boys & Girls Clubs, with new shoes, socks, backpacks, school supplies and more during its one-day Goodie Two Shoes Giveaway event in October.

A $10 donation purchases shoes and socks for one child.

BUSINESS MIXER TO BE HELD IN OCTOBER

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce will host its annual business showcase and mixer, which highlights the products and services of several Henderson businesses, from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort, 101 Montelago Blvd. More than 30 businesses will be showcased at the event.

Registration to participate is open to Henderson Chamber of Commerce members businesses. The event itself is free and open to the public. More than 400 business professionals are expected to attend.
