MCDONIEL ELEMENTARY TEACHER VISITS HONDURAS
Jennifer Ranney, a teacher at McDoniel Elementary School, visited Honduras over the summer as part of an educators' tour sponsored by the Heifer International organization.
Ranney had the opportunity to learn about the causes of hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and other issues.
McDoniel Elementary is at 1831 Fox Ridge Drive in Henderson.
NIKETOWN HOSTS APPRECIATION NIGHT
Niketown Las Vegas hosted a Physical Educators Appreciation night on Sept. 6, and CCSD's P.E. Teacher of the Year awards were given out that evening.
The elementary P.E. teachers of the year in the southeastern part of the valley are Isabel Goldstein from McCaw Elementary, 57 Lynn Lane; and Randy Gronert from Ward Elementary, 1555 E. Hacienda Ave.
In addition, the female high school P.E. teacher of the year is Diane Hernandez from Silverado High School, 1650 Silver Hawk Ave.
The female middle school P.E. teacher of the year is Jen Whited from Del Webb Middle School, 2200 Reunion Drive; and the male middle school P.E. teacher of the year is Sean Farnsworth from Greenspun Junior High, 140 N. Valle Verde Drive.
The Inspiration of the Year award went to Esther Anderson and Cindi Davis, both from Silvestri Junior High, 1055 Silverado Ranch Blvd.
VISION SOURCE TO AWARD THREE SCHOLARSHIPS
Vision Source is awarding three 2008 graduates of Las Vegas, Henderson or Boulder City high schools with $1,000 scholarships.
The See the Change scholarship rewards students for academic achievement, as well as contributions to community-service projects. Students must demonstrate visionary thinking in developing community service-based solutions to health issues that challenge Las Vegas. In essay format, students will describe what they see as an important health issue and present a community-service project that will solve or ease the burden of that health issue.
Applications are available at www.visionsourcevegas.com, through CCSD or at any one of the 10 Vision Source offices. Applications must be dropped off in person to a local Vision Source office no later than March 14.
EDUCATION HERO AWARD RECOGNIZES WOODBURY
The Public Education Foundation's 2007 Education Hero award dinner recognized Bruce Woodbury as the education hero this year, and Lois Tarkanian received its Lifetime Education Achievement award.
